Warmup - One-Point Boxes

1.9K
Course In Progress

Here's a quick warm-up exercise for one-point perspective:

  • Start by copying the page I drew.
  • Set it aside and sketch your own boxes in one-point perspective.
  • Draw these boxes in different directions - up, down, left, right, and into the distance.
  • Vary the box sizes and dimensions.

Remember, warmups are meant to be repeated for 5-10 minutes before drawing sessions. Also, don't forget about the warmups from earlier in the course that help you improve your straight lines (Straight Taper, Trace the Ruler, Connect the Dots)

Awesome progress! You are clearly putting in the work by practicing a lot. Something to improve with these 1 point perspective boxes: the only diagonal lines are lines that are converging to the vanishing point. All other lines need to be fully horizontal (just as the horizon line) OR they are vertical (90 degrees rotated from horizon line). You have some of the boxes on the sides of the pages that seem to twist towards the middle. This will be the case in the next lessons on 2 point perspective. But during this 1 point perspective you don't really have a second vanishing point to converge those lines towards. I have attached examples of some of the lines that don't seem accurate for 1 point perspective. So in 1 point perspective draw all lines either: 1) Towards the vanishing point or 2) Straight horizontal or 3) Straight vertical

Did a bit of practice while trying to rotate the horizon line I'll be sure to practice this warm up.

I really enjoyed this project . I know it’s probably the easiest of this series , but i really got lost in the magic of it . And thank goodness because gesture drawing threw me a loop .

So I tried just doing one page of boxes and went right into the project but immediately got overwhelmed, so back to the warm up I went! As I did 2 pages I started noticing what I needed to practice so I gave myself the task of doing 100 boxes. By the halfway point I felt a lot more comfortable with the exercise and then realized I still have to work on making my lines that go into the vanishing point straighter. On to the project now!

This was a pretty relaxing warmup since there was not much thinking involved: draw the front face and the rest of the box comes together.

Boxes, boxes, boxes! I have not realize what a struggle it is to keep your vertical lines vertical and horizontal lines horizontal before….

Here are my warm-ups. Drawing straight lines for the rectangles was more challenging than I expected.
Melanie Scearce
Make sure you practice the connect the dots exercise if you struggled with the straight lines in this assignment! :)
