Warmup - One-Point Boxes

1.7K
Course In Progress

Here's a quick warm-up exercise for one-point perspective:

  • Start by copying the page I drew.
  • Set it aside and sketch your own boxes in one-point perspective.
  • Draw these boxes in different directions - up, down, left, right, and into the distance.
  • Vary the box sizes and dimensions.

Remember, warmups are meant to be repeated for 5-10 minutes before drawing sessions. Also, don't forget about the warmups from earlier in the course that help you improve your straight lines (Straight Taper, Trace the Ruler, Connect the Dots)

So I tried just doing one page of boxes and went right into the project but immediately got overwhelmed, so back to the warm up I went! As I did 2 pages I started noticing what I needed to practice so I gave myself the task of doing 100 boxes. By the halfway point I felt a lot more comfortable with the exercise and then realized I still have to work on making my lines that go into the vanishing point straighter. On to the project now!

This was a pretty relaxing warmup since there was not much thinking involved: draw the front face and the rest of the box comes together.

Boxes, boxes, boxes! I have not realize what a struggle it is to keep your vertical lines vertical and horizontal lines horizontal before….

Here are my warm-ups. Drawing straight lines for the rectangles was more challenging than I expected.
Melanie Scearce
Make sure you practice the connect the dots exercise if you struggled with the straight lines in this assignment! :)

Need to be more careful with my verticals and horizontals. Didn't realize they were off until I saw the photo.

Warmups! Great way to practice drawing straight lines too. Could definitely tell some angles were a little off as some corners didn't line up right in the x-ray view.

Played a bit with the location of the horizon line.
Gannon Beck
Very nice,, however, be carful to keep your facing lines parallel and perpendicular to your horizon line when tilting the horizon line.

Procreate dreams just released and I’m really excited to play around with animating stuff! As my first exercise I wanted to draw a box rotating. How hard could it be? ( evidently still quite hard)
Christopher Reed
Nice work! I'm excited to start working with Dreams too!
Gannon Beck
That is tough, but great job! Mastering intuitive boxes well enough to do that is one of the best skills to focus on in order to draw from your imagination. Ditto on a tumbling cylinder.
