Course In Progress
As you develop your eyes to judge proportions, you won't need to measure as much. In this bonus measuring demo, I’m going to rely a little less on the measuring and more on just trusting my eyeballs.

These practice pieces are digital paintings — I hardly used any pencil measurements and mostly trusted my eyes. I added some tilted portraits and small thumbnail portraits to train my eyeballing.

You have great eyes!

A collection of traditional pencil drawings where I used the pencil for measuring, plus a comparison between my first and second drawings.

I made an attempt at spiderman here. 😅 After I drew him I decided to graphite the background and erase out the clouds. So spiderman is white, I'm trying to bring him out, I know I need more value but I'm jus making it worse so 🤣 I'm calling it.
I got lost on what to do with his body because every time I attempt any details it messes everything up. I think if I was gonna keep going I'd add charcoal or maybe even switch to some multi media and get some ink going 🤷

Mouth are so hard to draw 😅

Tried my best to draw from the same reference as in the video. Feel like it’s not completely accurate, but I’m happy with how it turned out.

Eyeballed and then corrected 2 times. Feels a little easier with a profile.

Love the curve from the top of the hat to the chin. Great rhythm. I agree with Youssef on the shapes as well, looks awesome!

just have to point out cool line weight and shapes great job💪

I definitely had fun doing this, but I also felt like I had a lot more freedom to change things without feeling "did I get this measurement right" or "did I make a mistake". Honestly, I'm gonna do more of these, proportion and measurement drawings ( ͡°( ͡° ͜ʖ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ʖ ͡°) ͡°)
(edit) Here is a second drawing I did with a (full) mouth, and it also has some corrections (I did take some inspiration from Shreyans from the comments for the mouth).

I'm gradually getting better with trusting my eyes while using plum lines. I appreciate any feedbacks.

I let fear and intimidation creep in and I felt ill-prepared to do a sketch by completely eyeballing; so I checked my work as I progressed, measuring as I went; then eyeballing, correcting, etc. That effort is the first sketch. I then reviewed Stan doing the Demo- Eyeballing proportions video, and felt inspired to try even if I 'failed'; so I did the second sketch by eyeballing only. My skill with eyeballing is low but I have to start somewhere. I felt good about making the effort for that 100% eyeball. Generally those eyeball shapes are 1.25 - 1.3 times bigger, though the facial details are closer to correct proportion. I have another sketch of a man that I did with a similar combo of eyeball/correct with measure/eyeball/ correct with measure that I will now do a 100% eyeball effort. Then in future I will start with eyeball only and then do the second one with corrections as I go.

I’m pretty happy with this. Idk that I’m better at one method vs the other but I did notice I had a lot more fun when I wasn’t constantly measuring. Also the eye makeup sooo threw me off, I had to shade in the one eye because my brain couldn’t make sense of what I was looking at

This looks really good! The tapered marks and variable lineweights are lovely.
The way you handled the makeup is cool. You could adjust the construction on this eye a little bit. Maybe it’s because you redrew it already. I think its lost some of its structure. Flattened out.
Great stuff. Keep it up 👍

Eyeballed my way through these portraits. I think I am more suitable with eyeballing than to measure each element as it takes more time and is quite frustrating if certain parts doesn't align, wereas when guessing I can almost instantly fix it if it doesn't feel right. The only thing I struggled a bit was to draw the features (eyes, nose, mouth..). In the second one, the eyes look kinda miss balanced, I think I need more practice.

tried with less measurements and more eyeballing but proportions are off
thought of shading just for fun, any suggestions will be much appreciated
