As you develop your eyes to judge proportions, you won't need to measure as much. In this bonus measuring demo, I’m going to rely a little less on the measuring and more on just trusting my eyeballs.

My attempt at drawing this portrait while watching Stan draw his. Proportions were a little off on length and width but not to bad. My facial features definitely need to be practiced and improved. Overall happy with my version.
Andrea Anaya
This is my attempt before watching the video. I seem to have done alright with the features but the head shape and ear placement and neck placement is incorrect. I have noticed that I have a tendency to make my heads too small! Going to watch the video and try again.
Andrea Anaya
This is my second attempt after watching the video. So now the head is too wide but at least the height is correct. Also my lip placement is too low and the collar is as well. I need to spend more time measuring the head placement before adding in the features.

The jaw is too big, but overall good enough I think.

There. Doesn't look too much like Cillian Murphy, but at least it looks like a human. Sort of..

I found eyeballing to be less stressful and more comfortable. The idea of not having to be extremely precise, like with measuring, allows me to drop down a general shape (or a guess), and slowly fix the parts that don't seem to fit. This workflow is more intuitive to me as I have a preference to "feel around" rather than making sure each line is the precise place it should be. Will still try to measure though, I got sloppy when drawing the woman, which lead to her features being squeeze vertically.

At glance, it looks similiar. But when i attached on reference. Many wrong mistake that i made it. Make me dizzy… Otherwise it’s really good exercise
@waffletimecat
i tried this out and it was a lot more enjoyable than measuring for 3 hours! i have a decent sense of angles but a lacking sense of width and height, so i want to try more. i think considering shapes more than individual lines will help

I think I’m much better at eyeballing than measuring. It was much more enjoyable, in any case. As always, any thoughts or critique would be appreciated. 🩷

Hello everyone! Form the eyeballing proportions project I did a portrait of the one and only, Nicolas Cage! I got to say that I came out better than I expected. I like eyeballing more than be precise, if I do it measurement for measurement it takes forever. I'll admit that I should've measured a bit more though, especially with eyes, eyeballs, and lips. I'm pretty happy with how it came out! I also tried to do the Tetsuo Hara-like lineart and shading. Tell me what I could improve on! Have a great rest of your day!
@cpclermont
I checked it once in Clip Studio, made corrections, and then decided to render some of it :) needed a break from assignments Reference from Unsplash

I drew the facial features too compact and need to extend the top of the hair back more

Some slightly more casual studies - mainly with more of the eyeballing method and making use of digital for quicker comparisons. :) I knew the second image would be a challenge, as I always center the face more than it is in that sort of view. So it was a fun challenge! I had to thin the further cheek way more than I had initially drawn it. Last one I did a bit of lineweight practise as well with a second, darker pass!

Nice studies! I like how they have a stylized feel but are still recognizable as the girls in the photos. I think you probably made the correct choice with where you drew the cheek in the second one initially. If you zoom into the reference, there is a dark cast shadow from the hair that lands on the cheekbone and makes it blend into the hair very quickly, but following the silhouette of her face from the bottom, you can see it actually keeps going further to the right as you go up.
