decided to redo the pear assignment after getting critiques (thank you to anyone that did) and watching the critique video. The right one is the first attempt the left is 2nd. Any critiques would be greatly appreciated!

It was difficult for me to gravitate away from rounding things to doing sharp edges. It was also difficult for me to see the difference between highlights and shadows and the different values inbetween. Would love feedback on errors and areas for improvement.

This looks good! The only thing is that you made the upper part of the apple all one value (the lightest) when that isn’t the case. There is only a small portion of the apple that is reflecting the light that’s being shined on it. Hope this makes sense/helps!

This was a challenging exercise! Happy for any critiques or suggestions for improvement! I spent a looong time on figuring out the hippo. I ended up doing studies of the animals, simplifying a bit more with each drawing. The rooster and buffalo were easier once I figured out the method. I was more happy with a sketch triangle rooster than my "final drawing", included a closeup. I’ve also included a 'Roosterpotamus' as a fun bonus!"

These look awesome!! I really like how much fun you had with these, really inspired me to retry this assignment and loosen up with it

i think these came out good? I’m not great at values so I normally skip them (a truly terrible loop) but I feel like it isn’t too bad. I’d really appreciate any critiques though!

Your value range is great! These feel a bit painterly in places and less like shapes. Think about it like puzzle pieces, and how to design by combining similar values into interesting shapes.

So I’m new to drawing portraits and figured the best way to learn was do the 100 heads challenge and I’m currently on head number 55. I know my drawing definitely looks like A face, but it certainly doesn’t look like the reference. My question is, is that okay for where I am in experience? Or should I be more accurate for having drawn 55 already?

I just finished this still life and would appreciate any critiques!

This is a really nice still life painting! The details and textures are so good! I think that your values look really good, but that apple in the front is drawing too much attention and some parts look a bit cluttered. You can fix this by just choosing a few areas to have the full range of values. It’s ok to let some details fall into shadow. Great stuff! Keep it up!

If anyone wants to critique this still life, that would be much appreciated!

Beautiful! The pot with the steam is especially great. I like the variety in edges. Your still life is artfully made. The only thing I would change would be minor. If you darken the value of the wooden plate, it will separate the spoon from the pear and make it easier to read. That is all. Keep it up! This is great.

Still life Sunday’s
I’m doing a challenge to get better at still lives, so I welcome anyone who wants to improve to join me!

To address your frustration with your still life skills -- it's a muscle, and you can't expect a muscle that gets less exercise to be as strong as a muscle that you work out all the time. Don't sweat it! If you like doing still lives, do more still lives. And if you don't, try to be realistic about your expectations. Learning fundamentals and principles will give you transferrable skills that can improve your still life, but unless you practice consistently, you just won't have the mileage. And if you don't enjoy doing it, why have the mileage? I really like this composition! I personally would group the black box with the shadow shape on the table cloth because they are so similar in value. I do like how you separated the plum from the box by fading it out, it looks really interesting. Nice work :)

Thank you so much!!!

If you are going to render the values, you should render all the values- that includes the table and the background. That is the only way to properly judge if your values are correct.

I tried my best, but honestly I wasn’t sure how to go about it? Like should I have drawn the pattern, because I don’t think I’d be able to do that honestly, but the stripes count as values right?
