As you develop your eyes to judge proportions, you won't need to measure as much. In this bonus measuring demo, I’m going to rely a little less on the measuring and more on just trusting my eyeballs.

I have a question about this exercise and I hope someone can explain why Stan approached this exercise this way. My question is how come we aren't using like the Loomis method to construct the head first? Its the first time that I have done it this way where I am laying or mapping it out without construction lines. When I do this exercise, I ask myself like ok I feel like if I apply the loomis method I will be able to measure proportions faster and better. My guess is that Stan wants us to measure proportions in 2D before using the loomis method which makes us to think 3D. I have not gotten to perspective yet as I am still in the shapes chapter. I am not complaining because I am taking this as an exercise and I feel that I am improving a bit despite it being very difficult lol.

Here is my attempt, that's the one I struggle the most with. I feel like it's harder for me right now to eyeball proportions.

Nice attempt. Yeah eyeballing proportions is tough. It takes me about 2 hours or so to complete something I am feeling alright with. I think its just putting the miles in and see what works for you when you lay it out, and measure proportions. Happy drawing! :)

Here is my attempt for this portrait of Cillian Murphy. This was like a Master Study to me because I was studying how Stan does his line weight like around the eyes, nose and lips. This drawing took me a bit over 2 hours and I only looked at his demo when I felt stuck on lineweight only. I did the portrait by eyeballing it and not looking at Stan demo. I compared it with the actual photo and I was close but so far I am happy about it. I will continue to do more!

I don't feel great about this but I find that it is really hard to eyeball proportion without looking at shadows. This breaks the idea that we should be looking out for better shapes like in the last few lessons and isn't great for drawing the same subject later.

This was very helpful thank you so much for this. Also, where can I get a Proko sketchbook that Stan uses? :D

Eyeballing proportions—jaw length and width were slightly off at the lay-in stage. Used wider strokes for soft edges and left some areas of the features without edges.
Xana Mendonca
It took me more than 2 hours to do this and I had to correct the proportions so many times :/ and it still is off on the right side of the face.

My attempt at drawing this portrait while watching Stan draw his. Proportions were a little off on length and width but not to bad. My facial features definitely need to be practiced and improved. Overall happy with my version.

This is my attempt before watching the video. I seem to have done alright with the features but the head shape and ear placement and neck placement is incorrect. I have noticed that I have a tendency to make my heads too small! Going to watch the video and try again.
Andrea Anaya
This is my second attempt after watching the video. So now the head is too wide but at least the height is correct. Also my lip placement is too low and the collar is as well. I need to spend more time measuring the head placement before adding in the features.
Andrei Sorokin
The jaw is too big, but overall good enough I think.

eyeballed portrait I will most likely keep to measuring a bit more till my eye has developed

There. Doesn't look too much like Cillian Murphy, but at least it looks like a human. Sort of..

I found eyeballing to be less stressful and more comfortable. The idea of not having to be extremely precise, like with measuring, allows me to drop down a general shape (or a guess), and slowly fix the parts that don't seem to fit. This workflow is more intuitive to me as I have a preference to "feel around" rather than making sure each line is the precise place it should be. Will still try to measure though, I got sloppy when drawing the woman, which lead to her features being squeeze vertically.
