Perhaps not a popular opinion, but here goes: Having struggled with how to approach this assignment at the start, does anyone else find it super frustrating that Stan gets wrapped in analyzing submissions from folks who are way, way beyond the beginner level? This isn't the first time, but it feels like he's getting distracted by "ooh this is nice" and not focusing on the actual lesson at hand. This was billed as a basic fundamentals course for beginners, but there are obviously a lot of samples here that are from artists that are very experienced, if not already professional. Maybe they're just showing off or maybe they're chasing Likes, but it makes what was supposed to feel like an entry level course - and the community attached to it - much more advanced and really exclusive than it arguably should. I could care less if my own submissions are critiqued, but it leaves at least me with a "Why Bother" feeling when we're examining stuff from concept artists and other obviously experienced artists in what's supposed to be fundamentals class. For me, a relative absolute beginner, it would be much more helpful to learn things from people making the same mistakes common at my level. Perhaps I misunderstood the course intent or maybe I'm not the intended audience. If I could offer a critique, it would be more productive to dedicate more time at the start of each project assignment for a clearer statement of what the assignment is - or more importantly *isn't* - and perhaps some more examples, and then to more selectively chose examples that highlight those specific goals. Just my two cents; thanks.

Let’s look through your simplified animal portraits! In this critique, I’ll be looking through both level 1 & 2 submissions and giving advice on what is working and what can be improved.

One thing that Stan pointed out in the critique video I thought was really important; to think about what you’re going to draw in your mind before you put your lines/shapes down. I don’t think I’ve been doing that enough and drew too fast without thinking, which lead to both my lines and shapes looking unattractive and all over the place. So I did the project again, this time with some new animals that I picked out, trying to force myself to think before I draw, and to take the process more slowly. It was definitely frustrating and even physically difficult sometimes to break out of this habit, and I’ve definitely let myself loose multiple times during this drawing session and drew too fast. Will focus on practicing better tempo alongside next projects.

I tried this again. I feel like I'm not ready yet to push shapes too much and I felt discourage like some of the comments mentioned about not having enough knowledge but seeing Stan video critique made me realized some mistakes I was having like focusing on the outline WAY TOO MUCH. Still a difficult exercise but I feel more happy noticing the little improvement after Stan advice :) I need to keep coming back at this one honestly.

I drew along with the critique video. Lines and confidence have greatly improved!

I tried the lvl 2 project with a cat, it's my first time doing this but i like the results. I appreciate any kind of suggests, thanks you!

Here's some portraits after watching the critique. I think I did a good job with the simplification, but I feel like I cannot draw confident lines anymore no matter how much I practice, my lines look much more dirty than in the picture. Also I have troubles drawing shapes like the trump of the elephant as you can see in the little practicing I doing in the bottom left corner of the last image. I'm trying to draw long smooth lines but I don't know if its the paper that doesn't let me draw smoothly or not. Any advice to improve on the lines and the shape design? You think I'm moving too quickly between assignments and I should had spend more time on the line section?

I feel like my line quality has been deteriorating lately.

gave it another go. this is surprisingly difficult.

gave it another try after watching the critique. feels like they are still to complicated shapes
Rachel Dawn Owens
I do r think these are too complicated. You could build on these more really.

I struggled with this one I just feel like the shapes didn’t capture the animal properly with some of them and when trying to modify the proportion I feel like I just lost what was unique to the animal so would love any feedback back

I felt like I could have pushed my shapes more.. So I tried again. Here's my second attempt.

After watching the critique, I figured I needed to simplify even more.
Jessica Ambron
Not happy with most of these, but I guess I'll keep trying with other animals

To focus a little more on shapes I tried a few digital attempts of the buffalo which I found was the hardest one for me to modify sensibly. It helped a bit since I was using a lot of eraser and getting a bit muddled with my attempts on paper.

After watching proko's review, I wanted to focus even more on the 2D contours. I find these exercises just incredibly instructive and also amusing. It's just amazing how characters are created just because of the variation of shapes.
Patrick Bosworth
These are fantastic! LOVE the expressions, and shape exploration!! Keep it up!
@deepanshu12
any suggestions please
Melanie Scearce
Looking good! You got the idea and you're starting to experiment with different shapes and proportions. Keep pushing it and see what you can come up with. Think about the defining features of the flamingo/rooster and ways that you can emphasize or interpret those characteristics in interesting ways.

Gave it another try after watching the critiques. I'm very much a beginner any tips would be very much appreciated!
Melanie Scearce
Your shapes are looking good. You can push them a bit further by asking yourself some questions about the image to develop a narrative for this character. What kind of character do you think this fox has? Is it old or young, sleepy or excited, devious or sweet? Use shapes to convey the character you have in mind (this is a good lesson to brush up on how to use shapes effectively: https://www.proko.com/course-lesson/7-ways-simple-shapes-can-improve-your-drawings/comments). Making as many sketches as possible is key in this stage, so don't get too precious with it! Happy sketching :)

Here are my attempt for simple animal portraits level 2. I used an owl, monkey and my dog kenny.
Melanie Scearce
Kenny is so cute 🐶 You did a great job with the owl and the monkey drawings, and the dog drawings too, but some of them read a bit more like a bear to me. I think it's the portraits where the bottom half of the head is larger. Just wanted to point that out as something to think about. Overall, these are great explorations!

When I followed the demo, the exercise seemed simple and fun, but creating my own shapes was much harder. I’m not completely satisfied with them. I guess I need more practice.
Rachel Dawn Owens
Looks like you’re on the right track! It’s ok to keep your drawings a little sketchy. That bear is really fun. I dig his cape.
