Warmups to Improve Line Quality

7.5K
Course In Progress

Fill at least one page for each of these warmups.

  • Page Skating
  • Light, Medium, Dark Lines
  • Straight Taper
  • Trace the Ruler
  • Connect the Dots

Remember the key is consistency, these are not meant to be done just once. Don’t be afraid to fill up a lot of paper. As you go through this course, do a page of warm-ups before you start drawing.

I'm definitely more comfortable with straight lines after the 250 box challenge from draw a box In contrast - fluid lines are painfully hard for me at the moment. My mind and muscle seems to be super rigid.
@shadesea
There is my practice! Hope I got the idea correctly, because ngl I surprised myself with how well my short straight lines came out. Next time I do the exercises probably going to make my straights longer

I've noticed my lines end off slanting down. Any advice how to fix that?

This is probably going to sound like a broken record but it really comes down to muscle memory. The more lines you draw, the better they get.

Hi everyone! These exercises transported me to the art school! It was fun! The "connect the dots" exercise was challenging for me. That's because I tried to draw the lines on different directions, and I usually draw with the sketchbook rotated, I am not able to draw with the sketchbook vertically, or even write. :'')

A couple of years ago I tried the draw a box lessons for fun and found these warmup exercises nostalgic.

This was fun! I feel like I have done this so much that I needed to spice it up some. I think I have good control built up but I know that I need to slow down more in projects to utilize it. Exercises like this help show how much you should pace yourself well. One extra thing I think that is good is writing in all caps! That has shown me over time that you can absolutely fix your bad hand writing if you have good line control.
Melanie Scearce
So true! Slowing down and putting conscious thought into your lines is a great way to train your dexterity. Keep it up 👍
@sirmightymike
good exercises! Trace the ruler was especially helpful by providing the immediate feedback. I can see how these would be good daily’s to improve line confidence & quality.

My warmup pages I found these very useful and will definitely include these in warm ups along with the mushrooms.

Nice, keep up the good work! :)

I just want to take a moment to explain my connect the dots submission. I combined it with my own personal warm up of putting four dots on a paper and then constructing a quadrilateral and then partitioning the rectangle into halves, thirds, and fifths. It all requires connecting the dots as described in the lesson.

I know that alot of this is hard to see. I switched from an hb to a 2b pencil after the light, medium, dark lines exercise. I had a big focus on keeping my hand relaxed and not grabbing the pencil too tightly, as that is a habit I need to break. This is where having gone through some of drawabox pays off I feel. But i am still very inconsistent when drawing in alot of different angles, as DaB really focuses on rotating the paper to one drawing angle everytime. I do want to practice getting more comfortable with all kinds of drawing directions. I like that this course gives you more freedom to adjust to your own need and wants, instead of telling you to do something in an extremely specific manner. I also need to stop using both sides of this sketchbooks paper for assignments, as the back side just bends too much. I will use it for daily sketching, but the bend ist too frustrating if you try to get stuff right.

found this exercise very informative. Up until now I had attributed most of my drawing errors to not “seeing” clearly. Commanding the instrument needs practice as well!

Did my homework. Was super fun to do the page skating. Also found out I need to work on my light, medium, and dark line control. Great exercise.

Was doing these in a park and got a bit distracted drawing people. These excercises really help!

Mileage and consistency is key is course and I'll keep it up (that page skating exercise is fun!), but I do admittedly feel a little.. "behind," on motor skills for practicing for about a month. Curious if any screenless tablet users have any advice on how to use it more comfortably or intuitively? Just can't shake the feeling that I am going about something in the wrong way.
