I did another page from reference and decided to try level 2. I really liked the dynamic gestures I was able to give them from imagination. Studying the reference and drawing the gesture lines really helped imagining my own seal poses.

This was so much fun! All I want to do now is draw more goofy seals. I did forget to draw the gesture lines sometimes but I always tried to make my shapes dynamic.

This was an interesting project. I’m happy with how it turned out but I can still tell some measurements are off. I tried to not use anything other than a pencil so I’m sure the plum lines aren’t perfectly vertical or horizontal since I didn’t use a ruler. Plum lines and measuring is also quite helpful but getting the line angles to match was also quite difficult.

This project was a lot of fun! I love how you can make the sketches accurate or distort them to look cartoony. The buffalo was definitely the hardest to simplify down but I’m happy with how it came out!

I enjoyed my last study so I decided to do another one before moving on. For this one I studied a piece by Frank Frazetta. His art is so epic and detailed it was very daunting but I was able to find more approachable sketch. In this one he used many chaotic lines to create forms and shading. It’s really cool to see how the lines look like scribbles but in the context of the sketch they make sense. It was hard to capture that chaotic control from a master but I’m happy with how it came out.

I did a study of a Gibson Girl from Charles Dana Gibson. I love how he’s able to convey so much without using a lot of lines. He is very deliberate on each lines location and style. It was a struggle to get the same quality though because his medium allowed much larger and bolder lines than a pencil. I had to use extra marks to reach the same line thickness and coverage. Which I removed some line quality of my study. This was my first master study and even with the complications I’m quite happy with the result.

Here’s my character based on a manta ray. I’ve never done a character sheet before but this was a lot of fun! Also a bonus sheet for an opossum I gave up on.

This was a fun project to do! The VR Girl sketch was a struggle but I’m happy with how they all came out.

The snail was much easier than the boots but its simple shapes make errors more noticeable. I feel the proportions of the shell are off but I’m not sure why.
