ASSIGNMENTS

Cross Contour Project Deadline Extended!

I decided to add in an additional project video to practice cross contour. I'll show you how I turn up the difficulty level on ginger root blobs and turn them into characters.

Deadline: 6-10-2024

Turn the Difficulty Knob

  1. Start with random ginger blobs. Make them humanoid by adding limbs and a head. Focus on mass rather than anatomy and proportions.
  2. Use photos of people in dynamic poses. Ensure the photos have depth (things coming towards you, body twisting, etc..). Avoid static poses.
  3. Create specific characters with pre planned proportions, like a monster ogre with a club. More specific characters add more constraints and chances for errors.

Refine the Drawing

Switch to a black pencil for cleanup. Focus on line weight and clean up your shape design. Adjust cross contours to show depth and volume. Emphasize interesting shapes and avoid symmetry.

Very fun assignment, constructive feedback is welcome. I made these ginger people a little "robotic," just to practice drawing basic 3d shapes more. Since ginger people essentially simplified versions of human bodies, I should be able to draw them at any and every pose, at any angle. I refined only 3 of my sketches because I wanted to move on to the next project. But I'll likely revisit this assignment

These are fun.

I ended up with some kind of flying seal type object. I guess all of the seals we did earlier left an imprint on my mind. Haha.

This effort ended up being less ginger root people but people in general; and, still good practice for cross contour. Look forward to getting better with it.

I think I did a passable job with the cross contours, but it took quite a few attempts before coming up with a character I could be happy with. Going back and revisiting the "Shape" chapter of the course really helped to come up with some shapes that feel expressive and have some depth and visual interest. Even reviewing notes from "Lines" helped with remembering to use line weight and tapering to emphasize the transitions between shapes. Love this exercise! It really feels like a great way to pull together everything we've covered in the course so far and apply it in a single drawing. (And I'm pleased with the big chubby ginger dude).

This is an intro to character design. This one was high on defficulty for me.

When I watched the video, I was worried that I wouldn’t be skilled enough to have an opinion about the poses whilst drawing them like Stan did. Turns out, I did! So that was exciting. These were fun!

Hello! I feel like I have to share with you my first drawing that’s completely from imagination. The idea of a ginger root character being anatomically incorrect really encouraged me. I was in the zone the whole time while working on it 😂 I know it’s not perfect — the proportions and perspective could be better — but I’m still really happy with it 😃

Whilst drawing these action pose ginger people i had an idea of how this brother and sister duo would need to work together to defeat the evil lord plumpking and his army, not much of a painter but tried to get my vision across here lol Also a few from my sketch book :)

Here are my Ginger Root People. I used some of the figure reference images for pose inspiration. I'm still struggling with figuring out which way to "face" the cross contour lines to indicate direction and position.

Hello Julia These ginger Root people turned out great. You managed to give your figures expression and, above all, movement! Well done! :-)

Some lines are a bit scratchy so I might have to work on line quality but overall a good exercise

I worked on this exercise again today and gave it a second try—I love blobs :-) I tried to make my little creatures look a little less ginger-like and ventured into new shapes. I appreciate any feedback...

Very nice designs! It’s like you can create a short cartoon comic with them! Is the first one digital? 😁

Woah, these are super cool ginger root people. I dig the body language they got going on.
