Cross Contour Project Deadline Extended!

I decided to add in an additional project video to practice cross contour. I'll show you how I turn up the difficulty level on ginger root blobs and turn them into characters.

Deadline: 6-10-2024

Turn the Difficulty Knob

  1. Start with random ginger blobs. Make them humanoid by adding limbs and a head. Focus on mass rather than anatomy and proportions.
  2. Use photos of people in dynamic poses. Ensure the photos have depth (things coming towards you, body twisting, etc..). Avoid static poses.
  3. Create specific characters with pre planned proportions, like a monster ogre with a club. More specific characters add more constraints and chances for errors.

Refine the Drawing

Switch to a black pencil for cleanup. Focus on line weight and clean up your shape design. Adjust cross contours to show depth and volume. Emphasize interesting shapes and avoid symmetry.

Here are my Ginger Root People. I used some of the figure reference images for pose inspiration. I'm still struggling with figuring out which way to "face" the cross contour lines to indicate direction and position.

Hello Julia These ginger Root people turned out great. You managed to give your figures expression and, above all, movement! Well done! :-)

Some lines are a bit scratchy so I might have to work on line quality but overall a good exercise

I worked on this exercise again today and gave it a second try—I love blobs :-) I tried to make my little creatures look a little less ginger-like and ventured into new shapes. I appreciate any feedback...

They are so artistic and creative! Who agrees?

Very nice designs! It’s like you can create a short cartoon comic with them! Is the first one digital? 😁

This was fun and any feedback is welcomed

Woah, these are super cool ginger root people. I dig the body language they got going on.

That was a fun exercise - I painted the figures for fun with watercolors - the shading doesn't always match - but I always think to myself - learning by doing - I welcome any suggestions and also improvement proposals :-)
Tommy Pinedo
I always look forward to your posts, you got a beautiful way of bringing these exercises to life. 😄

Tried my best at going off of an idea that I´ve got, I think that the character could be more ginger-like, I also would like to get less messy next time. Happy for any kind of reccomendations/critique! Have a nice day everyone. :)

This was a lot of fun! More long follow along a please!

Used a bit of reference for the legs and mouth this was fun to make though!!!!
Rachel Dawn Owens
It’s ok to use reference as long as you don’t copy here. ‘Design dont copy’ is a great way to use reference. You did a great job. this guy is so sick. Coolest version of this assignment I’ve seen!

This was fun! Still have to wrap my head around how the contours should wrap since it’s not instinct yet haha.
Rachel Dawn Owens
These guys are so much fun! These are awesome. I love the different personalities. As far as I can tell, the cross contours are all going the right way. No big mistakes or anything here. You nailed it!

Will come back to this one, was fun to do but I kinda wished I did more than one.

I tried going with a dancing couple. Charcoal on Newsprint

this is my attempt to create ginger root ppl, since it feels new and want to have fun with this challenge (still doing practices bc need to have a better line quality), i think they came out good but still need more practice, any advice is welcome
Melanie Scearce
Juan, I love your ginger root people! It's cool that you explored different sized shapes to give them character. Also great that you started to change the pose with the ginger root guy on the right so that some forms overlap others and there is more emphasis on what is coming towards us and moving away. Push that idea more! Maybe make your ginger root guy on the left take a step towards us or twist his torso a bit more. Keep going with your pose distortions, you're on the right track. Adding more elements that break the vertical plane and "come towards" us will help you continue to explore and practice the cross contours. Also, keep in mind the rhythms from the shapes module. You can apply the same ideas to these ginger root people. Keep going with these, they're looking great!

Hey, I don't know whether my advise is helpful or harmful, but maybe try to draw your ellipses as if your 3D form was cut by 2D planes in perspective? (Someone correct me if I am wrong please!)
Bohdan Fedorchenko
Tried to draw a few poses. Making proportions more humanoid was a mistake. Had fun, but drawing poses is hard
Gloria Wickman
This assignment was an absolute blast! Definitely my favorite of all the ones we've done so far.
