Varying line weight can make a drawing more interesting and communicate a more complex story to the viewer. In this lesson, we’ll learn about the importance of line weight when creating engaging and interesting art.

lukewarm paint
My first try at line weight by adding it to a sketch I liked, pretty fun.

where does kim jong gi uses Thick lines on the inside exactly?
Chantel Brockmann
Definitely highlighting my lack of human anatomy knowledge. Proportions are way off. Regardless, line weight makes a huge difference. Probably my favorite lesson so far. Side note: My shading is hella scratchy on the background. I think I used too hard of pencil for it. Plus the paper I’m using is pretty grainy.

I havent watched the demo yet and so I wanted to see if I understood the lesson. Let me know if I did wrong. Thank you!

It looks like you understood the assignment. The Importance drawing is so clean and bold. I think the Light and Shadow drawing could be pushed a little more. Good work!

one is drawn with the hierarchy of importance and the other one is drawn with light and shadow in mind. Like always any criticism or feedback is welcome :)
Sapphire Bandit
Decided to do line weight out of importance today, definitely an interesting concept that could probably help my drawings be better. I think I did decently well with the rhino, finally got a good reason to use my 8B at least. Any comments, feedback, or critiques are appreciated!

Tried to apply the rules on a simple house. I hope I got it right.

And another one.

I know its late, but for anyone coming later, I also recommend QuickPoses.com. I use it for gesture/figure drawing. You can set timers for sketching the poses too.

If you're looking specifically for photos made for art reference, there are dozens. Croquis Cafe, Bodies in Motion, and JookpubStock at some of my favorites. I also recommend just using "normal" photographs and film stills for reference and inspiration. You can use sites like Unsplash, Pixabay, Pexels, and Filmgrab.

Daily sketch from yesterday and today. Still focusing on using line weight to define depth, and a little shadow.

20/6/2023 This has to be one of my worst drawings on this site compared to yesterday, it feels rushed and super lacklustre in comparison to everything else.

If it feels rushed then you weren’t done. I’ve had that same issue with my art. Trying to take my time on things lately. Nice work though.

19/6/2023 New drawing today guys, I feel as if my drawings been needed a touch up when it comes to me and references, got any ideas? Criticisms are welcomed.
Daniel Wood
Great sketch! I love seeing your dedication this month to practicing line sketches. A lot of your self-identified critiques will fix themselves as you progress and continue taking other courses. Here are a few things that might help, from a fellow beginner: - Learn to break an object down into simple shapes. Like you identified in this picture, the body shape is quite different in your reference photo. - Learn to stop after the initial laydown and fix proportions / shapes. Stan says this is often the most important step. That would have helped you see how small the head was before you added too much detail to fix it. - Slow down and make the drawing right; go step by step. Keep drawing, and keep learning! Great work.

17/6/2023 Searching for more and better methods of practicing. How you practice is more (sometimes) important than what you practice after all. Criticisms are welcomed!

16/6/2023 Drawing these little guys are really fun! Plus it also makes it easier for me to point out my mistakes. The simpler the design, anatomy, etc. The less forgiving it is when it happens. Criticisms are welcomed.

14/6/2023 I decided to do some extra work for this time, trying to applying what Proko’s been saying with only Thick, Medium! & Light Lines. I need to find a way to challenge myself with these concepts, so I’m gonna be sticking with this till I can go towards Values and Edges even the smallest bit. Criticisms are welcomed!

10/6/2023 Time for Depth and Form! I got the basics of what Proko was saying, thought it was a lot harder to implement into my drawings. Say I’m gonna move on from drawing Line Weight and explore what other options I can learn in the free version of the basic drawing course. Criticisms are welcomed!

9/6/2023 Practicing the Light and Shadow Technique that was displayed by Proko today. I think I’m doing pretty good for all these drawings. What do ya think? Criticisms are welcomed!

8/6/2023 Practicing this technique was pretty fun and I felt great for instantly understanding what Proko was talking about. I think I’m gonna watch his critique video about drawing from imagination, as I really want to start learning how to construct the many wonders in my mind. (Though my fundamentals need MAJOR work before that happens). Criticisms are welcomed.

I gave it a try both on paper and digitally. It seems quite flat to me ... probably my lines are all quite similar

Both are interesting to me. Paper version stands out more. Is it the use of more contrasts? White reserves.... Thanks for sharing
