Definitely highlighting my lack of human anatomy knowledge. Proportions are way off. Regardless, line weight makes a huge difference. Probably my favorite lesson so far. Side note: My shading is hella scratchy on the background. I think I used too hard of pencil for it. Plus the paper I’m using is pretty grainy.

This looks amazing!

Very fun design. I can also see your loose sketch underneath the finals lines. I would like to see the reference for this drawing. Nice job.

Here is my sketch from imagination after form study
Chantel Brockmann
Went straight from imagination no references

Didn’t study any images before doing this. Will do another one after the study. I was just curious what was stored in my brain.

I’m definitely going to switch to colored pencils for sketching. Normal graphite pencils are too tempting to fall into engraved behaviors. Trying to undo being very heavy handed.
Melanie Scearce
I agree with @ANX804U! Switching to colored pencils may not solve your heavy-handedness, that's more of a conscious decision on your part. I myself find that if I stop thinking during a drawing (aka autopilot) I'm more likely to revert to my own heavy handed ways. Not to say that you shouldn't experiment with different mediums. I love starting with colored pencil and moving on to graphite on top. Do whatever you want :)

I will say it is better (graphite pencil) because you are also learning line quality, I mean it's like keeping aim assist off in the game, I used to use only graphite pencils, make faces without Loomis methods, do perspective without grid when i started, it helped me so much and I can say it was worth it, the only problem is in starting things don't go the right way and I used to get demotivate easily, after trying only pencil you can always switch to coloured ones, but if you are not a beginner you can do whatever you want, I am also a beginner. but I think you should try both because with everything you will learn something new, but never limit yourself like, " I can't do this because I don't have this, there is always a better way." I am not saying this to demotivate you or anything, actually because I was/am like this ( in some cases I am like this to date). but in honesty do what you want!!!!!!, and be happy always.

My mindset wasn’t great. I get weird when drawing images I don’t like. And I tend to rush to just get a task done. Something I need to work on
Grant Schowalter
These don't look too rushed. I really like the way you focused on the rhythms. Something I forget to do a lot.

Those laces were daunting!
Chantel Brockmann
Those laces weren’t messing around. Yours look great. Love snails eyes!

The boots almost gave me a mental illness. No wonder I’ve focused on abstract art for so long 😅
@cpclermont
Those laces, right! Patience practice :p

It was so tempting to watch this video before drawing the pear. I definitely need to work on simplifying mine further, while having a clearer distinction of planes. Outlined the different values. Took the “edge” instructions in a very literal way.

Made attempt #2

I’ve never drawn values as shapes. Let alone with edges. Was a fun assignment.
