Did two studies, one of Gustave Doré's "A Veiled Woman in Renaissance Dress" and one of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's "Recto: Study of the Head of Giulio Contarini", then after Battista's head I tried drawing something else using some of his line ideas. Got a long way to go till I can understand their choices and apply them right, but it was a fun project!

(Just had to come back cause I didn't like how the first one went, this next try is marginally better me thinks)

Not sure if people see posts made directly in one's profile, but I liked these sketches and wanted to post them somewhere so...

So I don't have a printer, so what I did was sketching the rhino with as even of line weight as I could, then did a second pass to add weight. That's why the proportions are a bit off.
I tried doing hierarchy of importance, trying to emphasize the head of the rhino, and I like it, but I'm not sure if I properly identified and ordered what was important. I could definitely use some pointers. Fun project 😊.

I chose to do a walrus cause they look big and silly. Here were my references, the some of the initial sketches and ideas, and then the final one from imagination: a sleepy walrus watching tv.

Here are my before and afters. Still gotta work on not drawing with just the fingers for the smaller lines and I did get impatient for the afters so the proportions are off, but eh, it's what it's.

Great improvement! You can really see how your proportions, simplification, and cleanliness get better on the second try. Nice job!

Here are my before and afters. First the before boots and the after boots, then the before snail and after snail! This was a fun exercise, and while I still think I have a ways to go with making the line quality good, I do feel that generally the line quality is a bit cleaner in the afters.

I have a before and after watching the demo portrait, the before one was in a textured sketchbook, the after on normal printer paper. The demo was really helpful cause it showed that in this kind of project, outlining the shadows and not the features is the way to go.
I only have a #2 HB pencil though, so I'm unsure if the 5 tones (specifically the lighter 3) are properly distinguishable. Any thoughts on that would be appreciated 👍
