Second attempt at this challenge, not that satisfied with the results.. I feel like I haven't reached that coveted looseness yet, I still lean a lot towards that dreadful stiffness.. I'm sure it will get better with time, though.
Thank you and hope you enjoy!

Hey everybody :) I decided to retry the imagination project after watching the demo. The animal I chose to use was the pangolin because of how cute it is, and also its structure is intriguing to me. I love animals that have some kind of armor on then, I think it’s super neat. However, it can be difficult to draw. I didn't want to get too caught up in each individual armor scale so I tried to mainly focus on the energy and vibe of the pangolin. It was definitely a challenge for me. I started by using some reference pictures and drawing from observation, then moved onto 3 drawings from my imagination. Drawing this way is certainly humbling, but I’m glad I gave it a shot! It makes you have to think in a different way than just drawing what you’re seeing. Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this!

I am a level one trying the level two project for fun and dang it is difficult! I have yet to do an imagination sketch because I had a question on how I can better approach these darn feet. Any advice level two'ers?

Well I decided to move on with the imagination portion. I present ladle duck! I see I still have a long way to go in my learning but this was an extremely fun project.

I tried to go for a "cute but angry" kinda look on this one. The first two are studies and the last one with the big head is from imagination

My drawings are very messy :sob: I feel like the perspective in the one from imagination is kinda off (second picture).

The first 2 drawings were the references to find the shapes and the last was the attempt from imagination. It was fun but I still have a long way to go to be able to simplify shapes and then be able to capture them in the drawing. I will keep trying

Tried with the rats after watching the demo. It was not that hard as the shapes were kinda simple, and there really wasn't much complexity. Through the process, I was more confused on capturing the idea that it gave. To me, it felt more like neutral (or somewhat scared/curious) while exploring.
Lastly, I came up with giving it my own idea of something like cartoony? idk, or a bit more like 'a working rat'.
Anyways, had fun doing the project, especially after watching the demo, it gave me clear idea on what and how to go for the research or exploration. Any critiques are welcomed.

This project was very hard. I came into this really excited and full of cool ideas, but I lacked the skills to make those idea a reality. I haven't really drawn from imagination in the year I decided to take drawing and art seriously, just trying to find the best ways, methods, books and more to try and get the fundementals down as best as I could. I had a lot of roadblocks, and I should have done some things differently here and there, but I like to believe that with some of the fundementals, I got the basic idea. This project gave me a harsh, yet needed reality check that I still have a long way to go, but it also gave me reassurance that this course will help me more than I did myself last year. It was fun and frustrating at the same time. I decided to take the ironclad beetle as my inspiration for the characters I made, since it is supposed to be a beetle with a shell so hard it can take on like 30 thousand tons it's own body weight. I made two characters with this, one is the beetle with armor on standing up right. I am not really happy with this one, I like the idea, but I lacked the skills to bring that idea to paper. It also took me way more sketches than what I have showed here. The second one is the regular beetle, but infused with some crab like features, I like the idea, and I like most of the parts I gave it, but there is definitely room for improvement, alot if I do say so myself.

I like your drawings. You definetly got the skills to craft figures. The only thing I see you could improve is symmetry, sometimes you need to place the centerline more correctly but I think it is a minor thing. And for polished images you may do some better linework (dark and light areas) but I dont think that this was in your focus. I mean the results speaks for their own they are looking realy cool.
The contour (silhoutte) of your characters are simple and easy to remember which is a very good. I think you also mastered shape using. You used a blocky boxy shape for your character so he can lift 30 thousand tons of its own body weight ;). As far as I can see it is going to be a villain if its more a hero or friendly guy than you may consider to add more rounded shapes. The fact that you are using complicated shapes suits me. I love when someone is manipulating the shapes and put objects in front of another - which you do.
My personal preference is to use more reference photos. I don't use only real life photos. Here are some criterias I consider when searching for reference:
- Silhoutte
- Simple Animation (Disney, Cartoons, Pokemon, Dragon Ball)
- Photo References
- Paintings, Colors
- Persons (yes persons who look like a bug)
- Future, Abstract, Tech Design
- Poses
I have added some additional reference photos I would use. It is not the best example but it was hard for me to find stuff about bugs that quick.
Hope you keep on going and there is something you can use!
Best regards
Alexander

My second attempt at this project with komodo dragons. At first I was thinking of giving them bat wings and making them into classic dragons, but after doing the studies I found that they are already pretty cool as they are and came up with the nervous looking one at the end.

This 🙌project🙌 definitely generated a lot of ideas & combinations💡. Had alot of fun with it.😁.
Creature name: Red tip Gulp.
Description:Usually found near rivers/ ponds with thick lush plants alongside the water and rocks.
They are quick on land and almost impossible to catch in water. They eat almost any insects yet favor worms, beetles, butterflies dragonflies & small birds. They appear Playful & shy however they do not like to be cornerd or confined...😳😅🤣😀.
