Alright guys, now that you’ve had some time to work on your level 1 “Learning to Sketch from observation” project. Ill show you how I would approach the sketches.

Hand and Penguin before watching demo. I definitely have a hard time getting into that sketch mindset. I keep defaulting to contours, since I still don't quite understand yet.

First attempt before watching any of the videos. I think the Penguin turned out the worst, it looks like some kind of penguin-eagle hybrid. Head/beak should be smaller and I didn't capture the pose well at all. Pretty happy with the shape of the hand. For the robot I really tried to focus on capturing the motion and leaning back posture and I think I did ok. Any feedback would be welcome.

I tried again after watching the video, giving myself much more freedom to make lines everywhere. I tried to draw some cats this time to switch things up a bit.

I really enjoyed this exercise :) After watching the critique i tried to "catch the energy"
@wildwolf531
Back after a long break. From left to right are the ones done before watching the demo then the ones done after. Still shaking off some rust so let me know any thoughts on improvement.

After my attempt on drawing the "spider hand" reference, I got motivated to try drawing a foot. Here is my attempt. Honestly, this was hard for me because I wanted the proportions to come out good, especially the toes. What do you guys think?
Martha Muniz
Good work! :)

Here is my spider hand attempt. I look this image because it reminds me of Spiderman. The left one is before the demo and the right image is after watching the demo. After watching Stan attempt drawing the spider hand, I think I am starting to get an idea how to sketch. The contour lines definitely helped me feel the image or drawing more 3D. What do you guys think?
Melanie Scearce
Nice improvement! Your second drawing looks a lot more confident.
Antonio Santiago
Before and after the demo. I feel like I thought I was trying to be free but after watching the video I realized how much more loose I can be. I was focusing too much on making it clean in the first attempt.
Tommy Pinedo
Wow big improvement on the hand! Love it! :)
Tommy Pinedo
The left image is before watching the demo and the right image is after. I notice tons of mistakes that I did on the first attempt. I was committing to every line drawing every detail. I did not map it out first and just went full in. After watching the demo, I understood where I went wrong and I did it again after taking some notes. What do you guys think?
Rachel Dawn Owens
Really wonderful improvement. The second one is more thoughtfully designed where the first one focuses on the details. I love the notes on the side too. Keep it up!
Kristen Budovski
Having a difficult time with loosening up and making actual sketch lines. Any advice on how to get more into that mindset?
Melanie Scearce
Yes, like Rachel said it will come more naturally with practice. Sometimes I find that when I spend too much time sitting at the desk, I get more heavy handed, so stepping away and taking a short break can help me reset.
Rachel Dawn Owens
Just keep practicing till it feels natural. Be mindful to draw more from your elbow rather than your wrist.

GUYS! who wanna be my friend with some feedback?
Jordan Andersen
Really like your hand, those lines give it a lot of energy

The idea of being loose with lines is too foreign to me at the moment My initial attempts before the demo are failing to do so, it kinda looks good but that's because I was worry about proportions, positioning, etc. I didn't "find" the shapes by sketching them. It is super hard to switch my mind into that mode. I am also worry that I am excusing my poor lines/drawings by saying "I am being loose and sketching", "I am not worry about the final product", etc I don't know - the idea hasn't click on my mind yet

My advice is to keep PRACTICING and make it fun and interesting, keep it loose mean like relax and just put that confi line out there

After watching this I realize that I'm not sketching I'm copying the image and I need to try again.
@iamtryintodraw
Hard to use csi lines with tapered strokes.its kinda wobbly
Rynhardt Vuuren
I've completed the 3 observation practices with focus on using my entire arm and turning the canvas often to do so. Tried to find the rhythm between parts of the image where I could. I've found this both challenging and fun even though I struggle on occasion.

it was really hard for me to remember to us csi lines especially for bigger strokes
Tommy Pinedo
Yes, I catch myself using my fingers and not my elbow when I draw lol. I think it becomes a habit as we continue to practice :)

I practiced sketching a few times and my robot girl ended up being the best out of the three. Hands are hard to draw and I struggled with the penguin. I watched the advanced lesson and ended up drawing a mantis. I have to keep telling myself that I am just starting out and it's okay that my drawings are not good yet. Also, if anyone is reading this, Stan has a podcast called Draftsmen and a video at the end of this course from his podcast that really helped me. I wish I would have watched the video first before starting the course because he touches on all the feelings/issues you go through when starting out. Great content!

Spider hand after watch demo. I tried to capture the rhythm of the hand, I had problems with the middle fingers when grouping them. But happy, I never usually make hands

I see that you know some anatomy, It looks great:]

Nice! :)

second attempt by the penguin after watching the video. I tried to understand the shape and try not to copy the reference this time while trying to play with the line. A little dirty but I'm happy,
