Learn to use blobs, grids, and perspective techniques to draw diggers and scenes with depth, even when combining multiple perspective systems.

I used to think that a picture can only have 1-4 vanishing points. However, this lesson made me realise that an obj/env/character can have parts that correspond to multiple vanishing points (e.g. parts that can turn). I have thoroughly enjoyed this lesson. Gave the digger a go too, and the orthos and the Blob Approach were a massive help! I did the side view first, then the front, top and finally the 3/4 view. The orthos helped me to get the 3D concept into my head better and guide the proportions. While the Blob Approach helped me draw the base of the 3/4 view. I also drew some striped socks like in the video. I couldn't get the form or the orthos of the human feet correct - but hope to try again after watching the 'How to Mechanize Organic Forms' lesson.

Hi everyone, have we learned how to do orthographic projections in this course, (basically drawing front, side, top views in proportion)? I apologize if I've missed it. Just wondering if we're expected to learn it on our own or if it'll be covered later here if it already hasn't been.

Looks like it's coming up soon in lesson 5.

Trying out the app - it’s really helpful! - my drawings are still really wonky - does anyone else get kind of a ‘magic eye’ thing happening with your boxes where they turn inside out while drawing? Started marking the ‘forward corner’ 🤔✨

I like the app. To me, it seems that it will be a great reference tool for basic shapes and the perspective of them, practicing daily. My drawings are also wonky, and hopefully with the repetition of daily practice, my drawings will improve. For improving line work, watch the Straight Line Discipline with Peter Han lesson. I would think applying some of his line exercises while drawing the basic shapes will give extra bang for the buck. I get the magic eye thing with drawn through boxes. This is covered on the Isometric Optical Illusions Assignment lesson. Cheers!

Not sure if I'm having a harder time today or better notiing where its off

Notes from the lesson and fooling around with the 3D model. I didn't reference the model too much. Instead, I drew some orthos and tried turning it in my imagination. I struggle with proportions although I know how to divide evenly in perspective. It's just not intuitive yet I guess.

Trying out the airplane exercise

Those are some nice solid planes there. Mine all look very, very bendy.

Airplanes exercise. No ruler was used, but that’s probably easy to see. I didn’t know how to use blobs for this - but now I ….🤔 maybe should have drawn boxes, grids etc. Totally forgot.

So for characters and placing them in an environment- is it a lot more about the feet than anything else then? Cause I can't imagine anybody calculating every rib-cage, every arm, every hand and every finger and make sure they all converge correctly to a point. I imagine the process then is more like this: you follow the general rule of covergence when you construct boxes for the whole body... it doesnt have to be completely correct, as long as it is correct enough. Then, based on the "platform" you put the character on, you should make sure that the feet looks like they belong to the environment, and then then all the other parts can pose however you like with not much regards to them being exact.

Playing with the new perspective app - it's brilliant and so generous to provide so much reference for free! Again and again I find that I struggle with getting the initial angles right. I tried to draw exactly what I saw on the screen and still my box cross ended up both rotated and tilted in relation to the reference. Apparently I'm rubbish at judging angles ;) Also, while I was at it, I practiced some overlapping forms. I think I've go the hang of crossing cubes but spheres make my brain hurt :(

Are we talking about the model plane? Does it do more than be a model plane?

oh your post reminds me, maybe you have this site or don't need it, but I have it in my bookmarks and I look at it when I want to feel trippy https://eyes.training/intersections/

I tried to draw Galinda and Elphaba since I couldn't think of my own characters. The blobs made it way easier to draw in perspective!

Wasn't thinking of blobs yesterday, much less loathsome today. Whoo hoo!

Just playing with a box. Moving, jumping, dancing, keeping it as simple as possible. - And thank you for the brilliant Zolly app!!!
