Itā€™s time to simplify those snails and boots! I show you how I would do it in these step-by-step demos for the level 1 CSI project. Make sure to check back tomorrow for my level 2 demonstrations!

Here is my sketch. I've just realized I drew the 2 boots as separate pieces and did not respect their placement. I believe my lines still lack of confidence :-(
Rachel Dawn Owens
The way you draw is very organic and I like it.

My first two. I would say that Iā€™m really disappointed in these, but in reality this is some of the best drawing Iā€™ve done. I am a complete noob haha. Yes the heels on the boots werenā€™t on the same plane, but Iā€™ve learned from my mistake. I welcome any feedback :)

Feeling a bit dissatisfied with my process of doing the boots the first time (left pic), I re-did them a second time after watching the demo (right pic). They both look like boots but...

Simplify to CSI - Level 1, Part Two: Boots The first drawing was made before watching the demo video. I think it lacks of straight lines so I tried a second attempt with another picture.
Melanie Scearce
Good for you for self-critiquing and applying what you learned, these turned out great! You definitely have a good mix of curves and straights in your second pair.

Simplify to CSI - Level 1, Part One: Snails The first drawing was made before watching the demo video. I made a second attempt with another picture trying to improve the lines.

I sketched both the snail and the boots before watching the demo. The snail was easy, but the boots were extremely challengingā€”I almost gave up on them, it took me forever to finish but in the end, Iā€™m happy with the results.

This was a very interesting exercise. The snail was easy enough. The boots and the laces especially were definitely challenging. I fear I didn't simplify enough. Let me know. I was happy to find when I watched the demo that I followed a very similar process. I will try the level 2 references next. Looking forward to some feedback! šŸ˜Š

I just finished the boot demo and realize the issue is not a lack of simplicity, it is a lack of confidence in my lines. I am going to try the boots again.

snail went ok but i had to give up on the boots, i'm not capable enough to draw that yet

Your post invited me to consider how I'd feel in this situation. This is what I'd want to say, then: Give yourself a break and return back to it. Don't press yourself into it applying expectations - try the energy of curiosity, and don't care if it's not perfect realism. Getting the feel for it is a good start
Melanie Scearce
The boots are not a lost cause at all and you are totally capable enough to draw them. You're practically finished! They're meant to be a challenging exercise. I think if you gave it one more pass you can 100% it. Sometimes the best thing I can do when I'm working on something that is starting to frustrate me is to come back to it 30mins to an hour later. Usually I will see much more clearly what was giving me problems.

hello ! it took me longer than expected to get back . and as for the boots , i don't know but somehow i went with the straight lines more , though i now realize that it makes the the drawing more kind of rigid and complex. i'll work on that ..... critiques much awaited. Thank you! And fellow students, i really hope we all get better and get where we want to be. Good Luck ! everyone :)

These are great. I love the enthusiasm

i was scared too, but then i jumped into it at the count of 3. please don't worry . Hope you' ll give it a try :)
Melanie Scearce
Don't be scared! It's a great challenge. You have a wonderful start here, maybe you can come back to it and give it a try later :)

I really appreciated the challenge of both the messy boot laces and the striations of the snail's shell. Felt really daunting at first but I'm glad I kept at it.

Brand new to drawing, and brand new to art generally. When I looked at this assignment, my first reaction was that I had no idea where to start, but then I just dove in. And it feels like im already learning!

Before and during demo drawings I think my biggest issue in this would be making confident lines will keep in mind in the next demo

This is my first attempt at the contour drawing

Revision of the boots. I can see many areas to work on but happy with the left one. This is tough!

Hey, this is my next attempt at this exercise! This time, I combined it with quality line and line weight. I hope you like it! Any feedback is appreciated. ā¤ļø

Both before the demos. Couldnā€™t stop myself from shading the snail. Boot proportions were tough and I had to walk away and come back to it before it started to look better. I think I need to take more time blocking in the basic shapes and proportions, I tend to skip right through that stepā€¦
Melanie Scearce
Taking a break and coming back with fresh eyes is a great idea. I like your self-assessment. The initial layin phase is the most important when it comes to proportions, and the key is to keep your lines very light so you don't commit to a line before you're sure it's correct.
