Learn to use blobs, grids, and perspective techniques to draw diggers and scenes with depth, even when combining multiple perspective systems.

Here, I stayed with the construction theme and sketched another piece of heavy machinery. I started by focusing on the simple geometry and then added more details in the second sketch.

I got this character turnarounds I did for a character design course years ago. Would this work or should I try something new?

Since this video mentioned different objects having different vanishing points, are we going to learn in the future where exactly should they go if, say, the digger is rotated 30 degrees in comparison to the buildings?

I believe we will learn that too. Everything in the picture is observed from a single point. All objects must be drawn relative to the observers standing point. If something is rotated relative to other objects, then rotating the observers view will align the observer with that object. Which, I guess, would mean that the vanishing points of that object would be 30 degrees away of the other vanishing points. I am sure Marshall will show us all those details soon.

Since we didn't have an official assignment, I allowed my beginner self to play around, and not worry about accuracy as much. You can really stretch those blobs out. You can create multiple overlapping blobs and crate overlapping boxes from them. They're so versatile! Marshall, thank you for this lesson because it took me quite some time to realize that subjects in your drawing can have multiple vanishing points, and an infinite number of said points. Heck, i reckon you could have multiple horizon lines? One could be tilted for use in drawing a tilted or falling over object in a scene. A very important concept for beginners to grasp. Photo quality is crap. I still don't know how to take decent photos :/

Excavators are fun - but I like Graders even more. They are so weird looking machines with a long nose. Almost like the Borzoi of the construction machines.

Person that has never designed a non human character, that never drew a character turn around and never did multiple things together in a perspective grid, at 4pm: "Yeah this seem fast, I'll just do it before dinner how hard can it be" Needless to say, I did not do it before dinner but I did manage to do it before bed! In retrospect I should have maybe looked up some tutorials, I'm fairly happy with it for what it is tho
Michael Giff
Hello, all. I had a question about the cross contour lines for the digger. It appears that they would make an arrow head towards us but since they are going up and away should they not be reversed? Or does the rule change when our eye level is so far below the object? Thanks for any responses.
Johannes Schiehsl
Sorry. Can't help you with the blob. I am not sure how much blobs are really helpful or confusing. I am an oldschool box guy. Yes they have hard edges on the outside but they have a good heart. They want to help you by showing you exactly how perspective is effecting them. They show you the way to the points where things seem to be vanishing. They are your mentors. Your companions. They will always help you when you are lost in space. Boxes are awesome.

Gonna have to keep coming back to this, comprehension seeps in a drop at a time. I have no risk of losing nievete, all things eventually resolve into pretty girls in gogo boots, it's MY WORLD 🤣

Here’s my try at drawing the boxes using the blob approach. haha, I don't think it came out that great. I feel like I might be missing something.

Your big picture of these is really good - in that the relationship of the sides is more or less correct! The devil is just in the details when you zoom into any one of your planes. As Rachel mentioned, sometimes your lines are actually going away from each other, when they should be parallel, or a hint of convergence.
Rachel Dawn Owens
It looks like you almost got it. 3-point perspective can be simplified down to just 3 set of lines for the x, y, and z axis. They dont need to be super accurate for this assignment, but just make sure the lines are angled towards the imagined vanishing points.

Don't sell yourself short! I think those are great, Carmel :)

Oh here some cartoon characters I did for fun
Dennis Yeary
wow this was helpful I always wonder how you do objects from different angles. usually I end up just putting them in them in the same position.
Andreas Kra
Here, I gave the blob method a try and created some characters. The arm of the digger, in particular, caught my attention—it’s definitely worth studying more deeply to improve my ability to draw it more freely and confidently.
Andreas Kra
Here, I focused more on the arm of the digger. It’s fascinating to study how it functions!

Nice! I love the guy in the hard hat on the far right side
