Portrait Painting in Oil Without a Brain

Edges And Planes

Applying edges to our painting. This demonstration is me going through the half tones that I put down in the previous lessons and smoothing out the transitions between each tone.

This is the stage where the painting starts to look more "finished".

Your assignment is to follow along and post your work here.

The reference can be found in the "Grid Drawing" lesson earlier on in the course.

I combined the halftone and lightest light stage with the edges because i was worried about the paint drying before i could get to the edges. I struggled a lot during my first attempt (small picture left). I repainted most of it today, with my new sable brushes that finally arrived today ... i did not expect the much softer brush to make this big of a difference, for how we apply paint in this course. It's not as "painterly" as I'd like it to be, but good enough to move forward?

if you want more painterly feel , put down one stroke at a time and don't mess with it. Dip into fresh paint each stroke. Don't mess with it. Do this only in the light areas.

I softened and blended the paint with my finger while it was still workable. It's dry now but I want to refine it more with the paint mixtures that are still not fully dried. Maybe make the background a little more interesting as well.

Lots of time spent correcting proportions on the face. Hoping edges,planes, and proportions are looking okay.
Morgan Weistling
you are doing well. the drawing in eye areas are little off but in the ballpark.do some more rapid eye , back and forth, between reference and painting to try and see it.
Christopher Georg
working the edges, so much fun Morgan, sorry for the glare
Morgan Weistling
This is really good. There are some smaller little hard edges that could just be softened a little bit that would help it even more. Like the edges of the lips. Yours are bit too cut out.
@trashmammal
I like it, but im srill not totally haooy. Question: when i place a mark while wet ir feels like i mess uo the marks already on thr painting. Am i being too hard with the brush? Using too much oil? Is it because i didnt
Morgan Weistling
too much medium in your mixtures will get out of control. But despite that, I see some good stuff here.
Christopher Georg
Either you’re pressing too hard or the color is too thinned down with solvent. Try to hold the brush a little further back and do one confident brush stroke
@trashmammal
Apoligies. Is it becauae i used an oip artboard instesd of a gessoed canvas?
Gaye Sekula
I've rushed through this one over the holidays, not having enough solid studio time to work through it all while still wet. I will put this aside, probably forever, and start all over when I can dedicate time to concentrate. Your critique is appreciated.

Done up to start putting more colors to the skin.

find every hard edge that you left in this painting and ask yourself if its really as hard as you have left it.
@charliewoodley
Edges is gouache - help! I’m in a constant battle of muddying the painting, trying to re-find my drawing and fix broken values because the paint dried differently to how it looked when wet. It’s starting to become an impressionistic mess. I tried a damp brush but I am not getting nice results or anything close to what I’m intending to do. I keep adding more paint but I’m not sure if that’s actually the issue.

Still working on the background as well as the rest, but I thought I’d share for any feedback. Really enjoying this class Morgan.

looks good! go back into your average shadow mixture and find the shadows that have gotten too light on you. Like the shape of the shadow under nose. Get specific and try to nail those little shapes that make up the bigger ones.

My progress until edges portion and a little dip to the painting with color parts. Feedback welcome. I'll try to fiddle with the eyes more if I'm correct that the likeness goes wrong there. Or just leave it like that, still unsure. Will do one more session with this one and then call it done.
Morgan Weistling
I am going to wait to see your last stage of this before giving input. But there is a lot to be happy with it.
