I’m picking this is after having 5-6 days away from painting as its the holidays. Having that much time away i got a tad lost in the process. Slightly lost, but nonetheless having fun, just playing and learning the paint. I’m gonna repeat the whole process again at some point. I feel myself doing a little too much, trying to perfect things as i go. I started getting a little frustrated and felt i could go on and on correcting/measuring. Yesterdays efforts.

find every hard edge that you left in this painting and ask yourself if its really as hard as you have left it.

get out your average light mixture and see if you can tame down all the busyness of lights and halftones everywhere. Squint and clean up the lights. Try to make simple shapes in the hair.

this is a good set up. but try to organize the hair into simpler graphic shapes like you did the head.

I wanted to get some lighter tones in the background where my subject is darker so added some flesh tones and ochre. Quite enjoy the care free nature of applying the background. Squinting and the ruler aren’t new favvy tools

This is literally the first time I have ever touched oils and I may have touched acrylics once in the passed. Quite daunting at first, but enjoying the process. i may have made my shadow tone a little lighter than I would of liked. I added a little ivory black as I was going for the hair. Hope that’s ok? Intuitive as I was going. shapes, squint, average, simple runs through my head. thanks

I thought I’d give the grid method another go with a different and more complex reference. It’s very challenging thinking a different way, although very helpful! drawing the negative shapes is a very helpful tool! loved learning this method!

My new favourite tool - the ruler. these exercises are brilliant!

Really enjoyed this exercise. Huge eye opener for me. I was confused by the folding paper method so I just used a ruler? I Hope that’s ok. I was a doubting my effort quite abit during this exercise but stuck to the basics and followed the shapes. never painted in my life but always wanted to learn. Thanks for taking the time and showing us your process 🤝

yes, ruler is fine. I just have so much trouble with students and rulers I wanted to give a way without math involved. You did a great job!
