For some reason I was tempted to try this one with markers but I approached it in the same way, I splashed a bit of ink around to get some base colours happening and then just started sketching with copics.
Still building up to some of the darkest shadow areas but it’s getting down to the finer details now. I thought I would ask for critique before finishing it off.

I ruined my physical painting when I tried to do the edges but I went in and tried to finish it digitally from photo at an earlier stage.
Not sure if I have softened enough edges.
The gouache didn’t go well for me 😅

Edges is gouache - help!
I’m in a constant battle of muddying the painting, trying to re-find my drawing and fix broken values because the paint dried differently to how it looked when wet. It’s starting to become an impressionistic mess. I tried a damp brush but I am not getting nice results or anything close to what I’m intending to do. I keep adding more paint but I’m not sure if that’s actually the issue.

Hard to get a good photo of the colours, weird lighting.
I hope this is alright, my study is in gouache.

Hey Morgan, this guy called Marco Bucci keeps telling me to study your work and it swayed me to buy the course. I’ve got pastels and charcoal but I can’t work in oils any time soon because I have a toddler on the loose.
I am hoping I can get by with gouache - any thoughts and tips on how to make it work?
Morgan replied to previous comment that gouache is similar and he learned oil painting by first learning gouache. Hope it helps.

I never know what brushes to use for these, I probably should have chosen something bolder. I didn’t label but it should be fairly obvious which ones were done in a minute 😁

Okay so I did a few extra just to fill the page. I am somewhat addicted to the Proko timer and have been pretty consistent with it for a year now. I took my drawings from last week to a mentor and they suggested I try using tone instead of contour lines, and to try and celebrate a 5 minute drawing for what it is, so here’s my attempt at that.
I did a quick loose gesture drawing with a very light marker, then worked out of that with a pencil. I used remaining time and a darker marker to look for ways to elevate my sketch. There isn’t time for realistic lighting or detailed hands or faces but I found I could show what’s in front or behind, where things contact the ground and hint at the 3D form.
This is a new process for me but it was fun. I had to be really thoughtful with the markers since they are kind of clumsy and they bleed a bit but that made for some nice soft edges and a few happy accidents.
I’m trying to ease back into traditional mediums after a big cross country move so this was a great exercise to fill a few pages of my sketchbook and get rid of that blank page anxiety that I always get with a new sketchbook.

1 minute gestures, I think I’m improving at simplifying the form into basic straights and curves, but I’m not really sure what to do with extra time if it’s a 3-5 minute drawing.
