3 Weeks to Better Gesture Drawing

Mark as Completed

Instructions

We’ve got an upcoming gesture course planned with Steven Michael Hampton and to get everyone warmed up we’re holding a gesture challenge for the month of November! Each week we will post the rules for that week’s challenge, focusing on different aspects to practice gesture through quicksketch.

Reference: We’ve provided a free reference pack which you can access through our Timer Tool to create a timed drawing session. On the Timer page, select the Gesture Challenge reference pack, choose the quantity and duration in the right sidebar, and start the session!

Medium: Any 2D medium, traditional or digital is allowed.

The challenge is open to all participants 13 and older.

Check this page weekly to view new challenges and submit drawings

Deadline

All drawings must be submitted in the comments below by November 30th to be considered for a prize. Rules are posted weekly, but feel free to do them on your own schedule and post them as you finish them. As long as you post all of them by the deadline, you're eligible for the prizes!

Prizes

Each winner will gain access to the upcoming new Proko course taught by Steven Michael Hampton, and a few surprise prizes.

Judging Criteria: Winners will be picked by Steven Michael Hampton based on accuracy, gesture, and presentation, and announced on December 6th. We'll also select a few random winners! Winners will be contacted via the email on their Proko.com account.

Weekly Challenge Topics

Capture more dynamic and complex movements, such as dancing or jumping. This will help you practice fluidity, action, expression, and rhythm in your gestures. You must submit at least 20 drawings to complete this week. Using the Proko timer tool with the Week 1 pose pack, draw 10 poses with a 1-minute time limit and then draw 10 more with a 5-minute time limit.

Go to proko.com/timer and select the Week 1 pack.

This week you’ll draw static poses, such as sitting, standing, laying down. Even when the body is not in motion, there is rhythm, weight, balance, and gesture that needs to be portrait to capture the pose. Using the Proko timer tool with the Week 2 pose pack, draw 12 poses with a 5-minute time limit.

Go to proko.com/timer and select the Week 2 pack

Structure and gesture act hand in hand. 😉 Focus on capturing the gesture and forms of hands and feet, which are often expressive and can add a lot of emotion to a figure. Using the Proko timer tool with the Week 3 pose pack, draw 12 poses with a 5-minute time limit.

Go to proko.com/timer and select the Week 3 pack
