How to Survive as a Freelance Illustrator

Mark as Completed
Marshall Vandruff
Join me as I look back on my career in freelance illustration and share some key lessons I've learned. I remember how, at first, I hated working with airbrushes but stuck with it and eventually found success. Back then, everything was done by hand—tight deadlines, portfolios to secure clients, and no room for big mistakes since lost work couldn’t be recovered. Then came digital tools, which transformed the industry. Marshall adapted to the new tech and embraced the changes it brought. Still, he points out that some fundamentals haven’t changed: hitting deadlines, producing quality work, and building solid relationships with clients. Through his experiences, Marshall hopes to inspire others to improve their craft and build strong careers in the creative world.

Dear Marshall! I am taking your perspective course, and I am excited to see your artworks, too. Thank you for making this video, I learned a lot. It was also an interesting history lesson. :)

I feel like you've mentioned this in previous videos, but are you going to do a class over airbrushing? If so, I have money for you!!!

Hi Marshall! I'm trying to make a habit of commenting and leaving my thoughts, something I'm not very good at. I saw this first on Youtube and immediately clicked on to watch it, and thoroughly enjoyed learning about how things were done back in the day (For much of it, I was either not born or simply a wee lad making his first pencil marks, but these technical kinds of drawings awed me even back then). Then I clicked back onto this tab to see if any new lessons were here, and saw this video again. Happily clicked onto it to enjoy it a second time! My dad would often try to sell me on the virtues of living in California, since he worked a lot in L.A., but being an Alaskan I just never thought I could withstand the heat. I would try if I could though, for a chance to learn at one of your in-person classes! For now, this is great. Love the stories, and I hope to hear more.

Thanks for posting this Marshall. I learned a lot, and although I am a beginner, it's great to know the standards that the pros uphold. It was motivating and inspiring. Deadlines for work will be a bit of a challenge for me vs. my leisurely hobbyist sketchbook pace.

Thank you so much for sharing! I would love to join your classes. Maybe one day. We're all so lucky to be able to follow you here on Proko. And your Bridgman course on Youtube is brilliant! I love the way you combine some lessons on perspective in there.

Fantastic video, thanks for showing and explaining your earlier work Marshall. I had no idea what went into these airbrushed drawings. The stories - It's the way you tell em too ! Cheers.

For about fifty years now, I’ve often thought about getting an airbrush, but never took the plunge. Is 61 years of age too old to take the plunge? I think I already know that answer. 🤣 After spending 40+ years operating printing presses, I experienced firsthand the industry transform from analog to digital. From a commercial standpoint, digital is the only way to go. And from the love of one off art perspective, analog all the way. I got The Master of Illusions book by Sandro Del-Prete after being exposed to him from your perspective course video about him. I am thoroughly enjoying that book by the way. But, I have a feeling that in the next few weeks or so, that I will have an airbrush in my hands! I hope sweat doesn’t interfere with my water based paint! Gee thanks, Marshall! 🤣 🤷‍♂️

Incredible work by Marshall, and really interesting to listen to all the stories! I was anticipating looking through Marshall's actual sketchbooks after seeing some of his amazing sketches in the perspective course. I hope there will be another tour by Marshall some other time where he goes through the beautiful and creative drawings in his sketchbooks.
