Michael Hampton
This course teaches students to draw realistic human heads, from basic structure to detailed features, using Loomis-inspired techniques.

Stick to this course and revisit the lessons again and again, it is really worth it. My portrait drawing skills have gotten so much better thanks to this course. Repetition really is key and if you do that, this is really going to take your drawings to the next level. Patience is key!

there wil be a video about to shade and colour heads and faces? And there will be a focus on lips nose and eyes as well all the major face muscles?
Sean Ramsey
There will be a whole section dedicated to the features and major face muscles that you need to know! This course will not focus on shading, as it's more about the planes/construction that you need to do before you begin shading. That said, there will be a lesson on shading later, it just won't be an in depth topic like the construction aspects of the course.
@agradoville
Here is my frustration. I can draw fairly well when looking at a reference but can’t seem to translate placing those features on my heads once I get the head construction down, WHY can’t I draw without looking at something? I can copy a reference in detail but when I try to add features without looking at a reference I fail miserably. Will this course tech me HOW to go from realism by copying to realism from imagination?
Nancy Welter
I can copy a reference photo but for me, my goal is moving past that level and drawing from life and a head from imagination.

I hope I’m not very late to the course. Will Michael Hampton review the future assignments of this course?
Sean Ramsey
The second assignment video is supposed to come out tomorrow so if you submit your work to that video's assignment page before the critiques are filmed you'll have a chance to be in the video critique!
Zaki ZAKARIA
Hi, Mr Hampton! Planning to buy your course someday. Just wondering, does this course include a workbook or a diagram of your lessons as reference? I can actually look up your book, which I have, but personally would love a stronger focus on heads.
Michael Hampton
No workbook as of yet :/

Is there an option for those who want the full course or does everyone have to go at the same pace and wait for weekly releases?
Sean Ramsey
Everyone gets the same release schedule when the course launches until the course is completed. While it's in progress you'll be able to submit your drawings for critique in the Assignment videos (which one should come out today).

is this course good for an absolute beginner? I'm currently in the drawing basic course
Michael Hampton
Hard to say. I try to keep things as simple as possible and very step by step. It's a challenging subject though.

It's 2:09 EST here and I was forced to do actual work instead of being pleasantly distracted by this course!

Looking forward to this going live today (still early in the UK). I’ve learnt more about portrait drawing from Michael’s head drawing instruction (book and videos) than anywhere else.

Hello Mr. Michael Hampton, This is my first time here. I would like to know more about the structure of this course. Will each part of the course be available weekly after "student critiques," or for example : will the entire course be available on the launch date with selected exercises critiqued every two weeks? Thank you for your response.
Sean Ramsey
Hey! Just hopping in to clarify this one. The course will have 2 lessons release each week (with the exception of assignment weeks to give people time to do the assignment for critiques). The entire course has been filmed though so we're keeping a fast paced release schedule so students can practice the concepts, get feedback from critiques, and move onto the next lesson groups at a good pace.
Michael Hampton
The whole course will be available as of the launch date.
Larry Zeitman
When does this course begin. When will the lessons be posted. Thanks
Michael Hampton
June 12!

Hello! Before purchasing the course, do you think this course would be better to be taken before stan's portrait drawing course? Since it's more about learning the forms first?
Michael Hampton
Not too sure. But yes, it definitely puts an emphasis on form and structure. Less so in lighting/rendering.
Tapendra Shahi
Will this course also be teaching how to shade the head as well? I would really love to learn that from you. I will be buying this one anyways tho.
Michael Hampton
There is a short section at the end where I address the addition of light and shadow. It's not the emphasis but there is a demo :)

Thank you so much for this course! Your book and YouTube content has helped me and taught me so much and Im realy looking forward to starting this course! Just a small question: Could you please share if facial expressions are going to be covered, and if not, do you have any recommendations about useful resources or ways of studying them?
Michael Hampton
That's awesome! I'm so happy to hear that 😊 Unfortunately, no. This course focuses more on the structure and not on anatomy and expression. Hmm. Have you checked out the Anatomy 4 Sculptors book on the face and expressions. I really like that one.

Look forward to this. Head construction is something I've been hoping to get better at; ideally this means moving away from being at the mercy of reference images while at the same time not simplifying too much from lack of understanding and being stuck at a limited range of angles.
Michael Hampton
Definitely! I try to keep it as simple as possible and very process oriented. That always helped me the most when trying to invent heads and unique angles.
@lieseldraws
Hello, I know your course description says it's for beginners and intermediate students, But I was wondering if it'd be manageable for someone who's currently going through Stan's Drwaing Basics. I do have some knowledge of perspective from drawing boxes and stuff (still can't rotate them freely in my mind though!). Do you recommend taking other basic portrait classes like Stan's Portrait Fundamentals before tackling yours? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
@indiilly

Thank you for asking this question. I am in Stan's Drawing Basics as well, but faces are one of the things I would really like to get better at. I'm excited because it sounds like this class is what I was looking for.
Michael Hampton
I think so. I mostly visualize the head/skull out of basic perspective forms so it might help encourage/reinforce what you're currently learning.
@agradoville
I've never taken a course here before. Are these taken on your own time and how are the assignments handled?
Michael Hampton
Yes, everything is at your own pace. You can also return to assignments and lecture videos as much as needed.
Rogero Sousa
will all the lessons have Protuguês (Brasil) subtitles?
Michael Hampton
Not 100% sure. I need to check
