How to Draw Legs – The Quad Muscles

Assignment

Your assignment is the same as last time, except now with quads. Do quicksketch drawings of the legs from the model photos I've provided in the description below. Start with the gesture then focus on drawing the forms of the quads. In premium, I'll show you how to draw all the assignment photos, so you can check your work.

Practicing drawing Skelly, adding leg muscles and experimenting with Procreate. I used an app to see how the muscles would be visible in the pose. Also used Kenhub to check. Hope it’s all correct.

Nice! Is this from 'Strength Training Anatomy' by Frederic Dlavier btw?

I like the overall drawing and detail you've shown and (muscle callouts). She looks like she is lifting the weight. Is the drawing from a reference photo, I ask because the throat looks to be a bit farther out in the larynx area. What do you think?

Here's my Quad Assignment. Decided to use charcoal this time. Critiques welcomed, thanks.
CHARLES DEIGHAN
Thanks for the critique, I could chalk it up to being out of practiced with the charcoal pencil, but you're right extra study is called for. I'll try to make it sharper next time.

Hey, Charles, here’s what I see: 1) lack of clarity - it’s often hard to see the muscle boundaries, so I can’t tell whether they are accurate or not, 2) line quality is poor and contributes to lack of clarity, 3) the sartorius tends to vary back and forth in thickness along it’s length and between legs - it’s actual thickness is often impossible to see, so I guess we need to at least try to make it somewhat streamlined and uniform, 4) lack of structure, particularly in the knees. Now I need to go back and see if I practiced what I preached! Good luck!

Hey Everyone, please critique my quad assignment. Thanks

I updated the 4 images below with the IT which I neglected in the originals.

2022/11/9. Good morning everybody. Here's my latest legs anatomy study. Thanks.

Hi @Marco Sordi , nice studies! - In your notes it says that the rectus femoris originates from the ASIS. I think it actually originates from the AIIS (Anterior Inferior Illiac Spine), one eyeball below the ASIS (Drawing Quads Like a Pro at 02:50). - It would be nice if you captured the asymmetry of the calf muscles. The lateral head is higher and straighter and the medial head is lower and fuller. - The overall design of the leg doesn't feel very dynamic; the contours are quite symmetrical and have a bubbly appeareance. I assume these are studies where you focused on getting the anatomy right, and probably didn't pay much attention to dynamic design, but since I've seen you draw dynamic shapes before, I think I would recommend to push your abilities, and draw dynamically even in studies like these. If you need a refresher on how to design anatomy, you might appreciate this video How Asymmetry and Anatomy Go Hand in Hand. Hope this helps :)

Hi @viny, nice studies! Good gesture and form. It would help me if you could specify more what it is that you struggle with. When you don't know what's going on anymore it's probably because you don't know the anatomy well enough. In my studies I depend very much upon my knowledge when searching for muscles and bones. When I took the course I emphasized drawing from imagination. If you learn to draw the anatomy, based on the proportions of the 3D models, from imagination, you will have an avarage that you can refere to when studying a figure. It also helps me to attack the reference from different directions. If muscles confuse me, it helps to first draw the bones, which will then lead me to the placement of the muscles. When bones confuse me I start with clearly visible muscles. Sometimes I go back n forth; starting with bone, then adjusting as I uncover more of the muscles. When drawing the quads you might need to know the placement of the pelvis and femur first. To find them you might have to find previously learned anatomy, such as the obliques and glutes. When starting with the bones as described above, being able to draw the anatomy from imagination comes in handy, since I might not be able to see, say, the femur. I'm just placing it based on where I think it should be, with the assistance of landmarks. Usually I can get it close enough to help me figure out the muscles I see on the surface. When memorizing anatomy, as a complement to drawing a lot, I like to make analogies and try to relate the bone or muscle to another object that it looks like; often combining multiple objects resulting in an absurd but memorable image. I've based the technique on a method used in memory championships. I wrote a little about it in this thread https://www.proko.com/s/UhHz Hope this helps :) Keep up the good work!

Here's some quads. Very rough line quality, I know, but for the time I spent doing them, I kinda like how it turned out.
