Spine drawings from models

1st attempt at this, done before watching the demos and critique. found my lack of knowledge of the rib cage especially frustrating and I definitely need to revisit the portrait course as well. But as those weren’t the focus of the exercise I decided to push trough anyway.

Does anyone happen to know what this protrusion could be. By following the contour of the rib cage, it can’t in any way be an extension of that form. I have absolutely no clue what it could be. Any help or hunches would be much obliged.

Maybe it’s the LATERAL GLUTEAL FAT PAD on top of the External Oblique

Super hard! I am glad I finished this assignment. But there is one thing I can’t figure out: how to draw the rotated ribcage like the left model in my photo 4. I saw Proko use a center line to show it, so I tried it too. However, it still doesn’t quite look like a rotated ribcage. I would appreciate for any feedback.

Hey Johnathan, The first and second drawings look pretty good, but I can see the third one is a stumper. One of the things I do when that happens is I turn everything into boxes, it makes it easier to figure out what is happening in 3D. One of the things that I see in the third pose is that the torso is actually tilting away from us. This is hard to draw using the egg shape of the ribcage, but when I convert it to a box, it makes more sense. I did a quick sketch to show you what I mean, Hope it helps :)

Here’s my assignments🥹
Steve Lenze
Hey Karas, I like the way you do your studies, very thorough. One thing I am noticing is that you have the tendency to straighten the spine and flatten it out. Also, make sure the spine curves with the ribcage, and comes out of the opening in the top of the ribcage. I did a quick sketch, I hope it helps :)

Assigment completed, so many things to do better , I will keep studying !!!!
Myles Goethe
And these are all three assignments but as I followed along with the demos XD
Myles Goethe
These are all my first attempts at all three assignments without following along with the demos. I was basically trying different creative methods to best simply and exaggerate certain measurements and break out of old habits to best nail the figure of the spine.

I really tried my best, but something doesn’t seem quite right. If someone could perhaps give me any pointers on what I need to improve on I would really appreciate it

Hello, I'd say the first thing that jumps out at me is the length of the neck/cervical, as it seems a little long. The only other thing would be how the head attaches to the spine. It looks like you drew the spine first then the head, as the connection between seems a little inconsistent. But other than the odd forshortened pose, these look good!

ok, hi everybody! I really tried to do them... and think that I did the best. I have done a painstaking job in the structure of every part, I swear... But I'm not sure and I'm not totally happy with the result... I want to share it

Here are my model referenced spines :)
Xan Padilla
Here are my last attempts of each picture, at the beginning I found myself struggling to do the curve of the spine without having to trace it, by the end I felt a little more confident with the way I did the spine. Also any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Looking great!

Difficult, but helpful. One of the key take-aways from this is that the thoracic spine is very stiff and doesn’t bend a lot. Which on the other hand makes it difficult to figure out when the model twists or bends, since it then looks like it is flexible. Any feedback is welcome.
Peter Tinkler
This was tricky to saw the least. I did my studies, then watched the videos, taking note of where I went wrong. I seem to be ok with the structure and placement of the cranium and ribcage (generally), but it's the pelvis area that caused me the most uncertainty. I think in a couple of them my ribcage is too far from the pelvis?
