The last exercises were properly hard. I still have a hard time seeing when the thoracic segment should follow the curvature of the ribcage and when not. Right now it feels that there is not enough explanation on how one's supposed to make that decision and it's a bit random.
I went back after watching the entire critique session and redid everything. So many good tips, made me see that I forgot/missed/ignored the realization that the lumbar section ends 1/3 below the pelvic ellipse. If you are unhappy about your results, I warmly recommend going back and redoing everything mindfully, paying attention to other people's mistakes. It definitely will help!
Hello, these are my Spines! Any Critiques will be much appreciated. My main struggle lately is keeping my drawings clean and accurate. Also, it is a bit hard for me to establish exactly where the bottom of the ribcage is.
Hello, I've redone my assigment (with my previous mistakes in mind). Critique is kindly appreciated
Hello,
I’m looking for critiques on my spine drawings as I conclude the spine lessons. Anything you might be able to contribute will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Vince
Hi Vince! It seems to me that your proportions are a bit off. The head is too small and the ribcage looks too long and thin.

Hi @Praveen Whitefield, I think you´re doing great with this exercise!
I wrote a critique for another student @ehioe, and I think you´d appreciate reading it https://www.proko.com/course-lesson/spine-assignment-example-11-19-draw-models/discussions#46F
I hope this helps ;)
so i did the spine assignment of drawing skelly and it was very tricky i still struggle with getting the proportions right and i screw up the cervical spines size and the placement of the sacral and lumbar in the pelvis i think if i practice enough it will improve but any suggestions on how to do it and any critique or feedback of any other problem you notice will be very helpful and i will forever be bound to indentured servitude to whoever does help me :))
Dude...first, turn down the drama a little. You don't need to be forever bound to indentured servitude to anyone. 😂
the main problems with your drawing are proportions and structure, and for each one we will address differently.
For your proportions problems you need measuring. Use plumb lines, compare angles, shapes, etc. If you're still shaky in your measuring techniques review this proko's lesson:
https://www.proko.com/course-lesson/measuring-techniques/notes
It will help a lot. If you need even more help with this concepts you can try Dorian Item's accuracy guide. You can find it in the proko store inside his course "Drawing Fundamentals: Accuracy, Values, & Light" or if you're in a tight budget you can go to his gumroad page and buy it separately. It's very affordable and it's worth it. But again you'll be fine with just the proko free video.
About structure, I feel that you are not quite understanding the 3d forms of the pelvis and rib cage. You can watch (or re-watch) their lessons and try this exercise again or you can substitute them for boxes, It'll make it easier to visualize them in space.
But right now, work on your measuring. I feel that's what gonna benefit you the most in this moment.
Best regards
I had a hard time with these assignments, so I plan to redraw these at some point. I tried to nail the proportions the best I could, but I think the spine is too long in most of them. I also want to get better at drawing lines more confidently; I was erasing and redoing lines a lot.
Hey Proko, many thanks for this episode! I could actually apply most of your critiques to my own drawings as well. Its a very smart way to give critique, bc you guys obviously cant review every students drawings.
Here is my self critique:
- the first page was actually my best one, i should have kept using pencil and then use pen. My other drawings could realy use more cleanness and sometimes just more perserverance.
- on the secound page i focused too much on the details, the thickness of the spine was way off as well
- third page has my own drawing of the pose and then prokos on it (1-2, 3-4). I had trubles with the spines curvature and the perspective
- on the fourth the proportions are way off
- 5th-6th just lack effort
all together I am pretty satisfied, there is a LOT that can be improved, but I am glad I actually managed to pull through, as I was often very frustrated with my drawings.
I am sure to come back once i finish with the pelvis and ribcage lessons again.
