So quick question, everything has to be shared w/in the course discussion and no work can be distributed to Marvel for review that I definitely understand, but if I really nail a project, am I free to post that on my personal page or social media? Let me know thanks.
Zachary Carlson
I'm really enjoying the course so far, and I'm excited for the planned content! However, one thing I don't see mentioned in the overview is lettering! Will that be part of section on panel design? Are we going to discuss lettering at all (in terms of balloon shape, placement of text, different strategies for indicating emotion, feeling, different types of speakers, etc.)?
John B

Good question! Lettering won't be covered in this course, but it could be something we try to tackle in a future free video. If we end up using a Marvel artist maybe we could even add it to the bonus section of the course.
@dinosthomaidis
The course is really exciting ! Are we going to learn how to draw characters in dynamic poses , too? I find it difficult and I want to improve on this , that's why I ask !!!
Sean Ramsey
Yep, there will definitely be lessons on dynamic poses and acting in the Character section!
@dinosthomaidis
What equipment is required for the coloring section ? I ask because I do not have a tablet or any similar device and I have never worked on digital coloring or drawing. Do I need to buy a tablet or something similar ? Or I will be able to complete the coloring section with traditional ways of coloring ?
Sean Ramsey
The coloring section will be one of the last in the course, but we used Photoshop and a Cintiq when Matt Wilson was in the studio coloring comics. A screen tablet and Photoshop isn't required, though digital coloring is the standard in the comic industry. You could get a non-screen tablet like a Wacom Intuos tablet or a tablet from a different company. If you're looking for an alternative to Photoshop, then Gimp is a free one, and Clip Studio Paint is also a cheaper alternative to Photoshop. Additionally, you could color your comics on a tablet like an iPad in Procreate or one of those tablet digital art programs. Hope this helps!

No equipment is required, if you want to use color pencils, that would be enough. It is just that the video will show coloring digitally since that is considered more convenient, but they have emphasized that you can do the coloring traditionally as well.

I'm so excited to start the course and see what everyone makes! I just finished college and started compiling my portfolio, this course will be good practice and content to build on top of my portfolio. Especially because I want to go into concept art and character design for comics, video games, and hopefully be able to make variant comic book covers as well!

Yeah, just signed up for the course! I really can't wait to get started. I'm a bit disappointed that there is only an introductory lesson online. (I'm impatient, I know 😂) When is the 1st class available? Good luck to everyone who signed up!!
John B

I know it's hard wait, but we've got plenty of content coming to you over the next 40+ weeks.

Hello! Every one! I am Malaysian University student from Japan. I apologize to late contact, and I really exciting to participate the course so much! I am still during busy semester, so might be too late watch the lesson sometimes. I would like to confirm where can I check the assignments in this course? Thank you!
John B

Assignments will become available for you as the course progresses. There's currently no assignments for you to start with.
Daryl-Rhys Taylor
Quick question: Are the assignments marked? Do they have a due date to be submitted? Thank you.
John B
1yr
If you want to have a chance at having them reviewed by the instructor then yes. We'll make sure to clearly mark the due date on the assignment page as they're released. Unfortunately, we can't guarantee everyone will have their work critiqued but our instructors will try to do their best to review as many submissions as possible.

Can anyone simpify the "user agreement contract" that was kinda slaped at us after we purchased the course ? :)
Toma Zhikov
1. You get limited license to use Marvel intellectual property in this course ONLY. 2. You can share User Submissions ONLY in this course. 3. Don't bother Marvel with work from this course. 4. Be nice to people, and don't share offensive work. 5. You agree with Proko's regular terms. Basically be nice and whatever happens in the course stays in the course.

Quick question: are the lessons released every Wednesday or at the start of every week?
John B

We expect to release something new to you every Tuesday or Wednesday. Unlike our previous courses, we do have to go through an additional approval process with Marvel so there might be some scenarios where something gets pushed to Thursday or Friday.

I have been dreaming of a course like this for a long time. I cannot even remember my life before comics. So excited to dive in and hopefully create my own book one day. Really looking forward to being a part of this community as well. Best of luck to everyone, I can’t wait to see what comes of this.
Ingrid Meyers
hey everyone! so excited for this class :)

It will probably be over 40+ weeks. There's a lot of content for us to release.

hello all, looking forward to the course. Looks like a good turn out so far! I always wanted to be a comic book artist as a kid but life had other plans for me. Now I’m retired after a 33 year career and working on a graphic novel to fulfill my childhood dream. This course looks like it will be a little more in-depth than my old worn out copy of How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way!😀 I wish you all success in the course and life.

I think a lot of us will have a similar backstory. Being a comic book artist was my childhood dream. I even out together a small team in elementary. 3 of us would pencil, ink, and color drawings and sell them to our classmates. I recently picked up a copy How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way for pure nostalgia, but i find myself being drawn (no pun intended) back to whenever I have a free moment to spare. Best of luck on your GN, hopefully you’ll share it with us all one day.

That was the goal! We tried to go all out with production value.

By a show of ink and paint covered, pencil callused hands who's here to learn to be a writer?
Neill Brengettsey
After hearing Zub's path in comics I can understand why they make this class comprehensive of every role.
Neill Brengettsey
Become a better writer so you can criticize the scripts you're given? (Smile) Taking art classes to become a better writer seems counter intuitive. (Confused) I've never seen a creative writing course that includes art, maybe this is the beginning?
@andytheartman
I'm here for the whole thing. I want to be able to develop the kernel of an idea into a fully realised comic how cool will that be!
Diogo Pinto
Hey, guys! Sorry in advance if this next question is a silly one - in my defense I haven't drawn traditionally in a while haha - Stan mentions 300lb bristol paper, can anyone drop a link to an example of it? When I google it, pretty much all the results I get are for 100lb paper. I'm a bit confused
Patrick Bosworth
Hey Diogo, any 100lb smooth Bristol paper will work just fine for the the inking coursework. Once you get to know how the 100lb paper responds to various inking techniques you can experiment with heavier weight papers, and different surfaces to achieve different results.
@heavyhands
I have an affiliate link below for Strathmore 300 Bristol 100lb paper, 11x17 is standard comic art size, tape bound or board bound option doesn’t matter much, tape bound is cheaper, David Finch seems to prefer Smooth, Jim Lee prefers Vellum texture, all available below. https://amzn.to/3rwHDJm No worries, I got you man. You don’t need 300lb, which does exist but it’s overkill for this , especially at this stage. Strathmore “300 series” Bristol will be perfect this. It’s 100lb/260gsm, it loves ink, and it’s affordable. If you want to splurge on 300lb paper that is out there like Arches, Legion, Canson, and Strathmore all make 300lb variants. They cost more, and just aren’t necessary, I don’t know why Stan is recommending at this point other than it is technically much stronger paper. Maybe if you absolutely flooded your 100lb with ink there could be an issue, but very unlikely. Any other questions just ask.
