Hello everyone! I've been working diligently on my gestures and I think that I've made some progress. I still struggle with crouched poses, but I feel like my line quality has improved and certain poses are becoming more natural. I've also been able to push some of the gestures a bit more which I think helps with their overall appearance. I look forward to any and all feed back on these. Thank you
Jessica Harrison
These are looking good Dan! When dealing with a crouched pose or one that has compression, or some crazy perspective, really look for how the forms and lines are overlapping each other. Right now the torsos are feeling a bit too stretched for the crouched poses. To help more with getting that compression in the torso, think about the torso as a bean shape. There are some Proko video's where Stan discusses this bean shape and how to use it with anatomy.

Your lines are looking quite clean! With more practice, you will build up the confidence to make stronger, larger, and more fluid strokes. I see a common issue of the "Snowman Effect" in your gestures in which you create very strong 'C' curves repetitively. Make sure to pay attention to the motion instead of the contours that you see. Not everything needs to be a strong 'C' curve. Look for the dominant lines of action. Another common issue I noticed is you breaking up the gesture with contradicting lines of the ribcage from the overall motion. I can see that you have an understanding of tension and relaxation though. Choosing the correct ways of interpreting direction, simplification, and understanding what to keep and take out will enhance your gestures immensely. I hope this serves you well. Good luck.

It's been a while since I've posted anything looking for critiques, but I've been hard at work practicing and I'm looking for a little feed back on my gestures from this week. I've really been working on finding the longest possible lines for my gestures, but I'm still struggling a bit to discern gesture from contour. Any feedback on these would be really appreciated!

Just adding a few more gestures!

I'm back again with a couple of new gesture drawings. I've been working on some of the feedback I received last time and wanted to show everyone two gestures that I thought were much better. I did alter how I hold the pencil so that I can use more of my should. It's a bit more difficult and the line control isn't where it needs to be, but I'm confident that will change with practice. I would be forever grateful if anyone where to look at these and provide some feedback! Thank you!

Nice drawings. The first one especially flows nicely. I would say be a little more mindful of proportions and perhaps exaggerate how far the arms are pushed for the second one. Great work!

Hey Dan, The first thing I notice is that your drawing these with you wrist. The best way to draw gesture is with your shoulder, holding your pencil underhand. This makes sure you cant noodle these and you will use big sweeping lines. I took the gestures on your second page and did some gesture drawing based on what I think the poses were. I hope they will help you to get what I'm talking about. Keep going, your not that far off :)

This is super helpful! I have been drawing with my wrist, but a few others pointed out that I should be using my shoulder more. I took your advice and started drawing with my shoulder and I think some of the lines have turned out better. I'm still playing with what pencil position is most comfortable, but drawing from the should has definitely made the lines smoother. The sketch over you did was also really, really helpful. Being able to see where I've made mistakes has been quite helpful with my practice today. I'll be back in a few days with some new sketches and hopefully the line quality is much better. Thanks again for your help!

Hi Dan! Interesting practices. I'm not quite up to task with my gestures and stuff, so I may not spot that well. Those are looking good to me. The only thing I find that you could benefit from is probably to use even longer curves and fewer curves to represent them, so they get less detailed, and more "flowing".

Thank you so much for your feedback. I took what you said to heart during my practice today and I think the gestures I did turned out a bit better.

Hello everyone! I'm continuing to work on my gesture drawing and feel like they are slowly getting better. Most of these are 2 minutes, but some are untimed. Someone in the community gave me the tip to focus on longer more flowing lines. I have a terrible habit of using very sketchy lines and constantly restating the same line to find one that I like with the end result coming out quite hairy or sketchy. I tried to focus on much longer lines, but continue to fall into the sketchiness habit. Any constructive feedback is very much welcomed!

Looking good! I like the flow throughout the pose. Legs look good. To get a cleaner and more confident line you may try that technique of ghosting the line first a couple of times before placing pencil to paper. Make little practice runs on the line you want to pull before committing it to paper. That helps me

Indeed, the improvement is there and can be seen. You just need to gain a little more confidence in drawing the lines. Maybe, before you start with the gesture, fill in a couple of sheets of cheap paper with circles, lines, curves, so you can get confident with the pencil and loosen up your arm and wrist muscles. You will soon see an improvement in the quality of your lines as well. :)

Hi Dan, It would be nice to present your work in a better way. Take a clear picture with a nice light and rotate it in a way we don't have to tilt our heard. I took a look at your previous drawings and there's clearly an improvement in your line quality. You still have room to make them better but you are on the good track ! Try to draw bigger and focuse on using your arm, not your wrist. You can start by a quick warm-up where you will only draw straight and curvy lines. It might seem boring but it's really helpful. Take a look at the Proko's video "How to hold and control your pencil". Also, I feel your are focusing more on the contours than the gesture. Try to exagerate the poses will give then more srengths. Watch again the gesture videos and draw along with Stan. Keep going

Gesture drawing critque
Hello! I recently started taking some of the fundamentals courses and have been working my way through gesture drawing. I've been practicing a few days a week for about two weeks and each day I practice for about an hour to an hour and a half. I really struggle with gesture drawing and eliminating the unnecessary contour lines of a pose, so I plan to devote a substantial amount of time to gesture drawing (hopefully at least an hour a day) for another few weeks. I'm hoping to get a little feedback on my gesture drawings from today (6/19) after my limited practice. For reference, I used the poses in this video: https://painting.tube/13-meisha-friday-evening-figure-drawing-fefdraw-august-11-2017/ I really struggle with certain poses, specifically crouched over poses, and tried to draw some of those poses multiple times. I also really struggle with added depth to my gesture drawings and making them more dynamic. I'm hoping a little feedback on what I accomplished today will help point me in the right direction. I really, really appreciate you taking the time to look at my sketches and provide feed back!
