I believe the original is somebody else replicating Malan's style

I really like the expressive sketches of Glen Keane and the way he uses line weight to really draw the eyes to the wanted areas. So simple yet so efficient
Wayyy better job being flowy and gestural with the lines than when I tried to copy keane. So easy to make the style look stiff. Good job !

For my second study, I pulled from the old school animation masters at Studio MDHR. Not sure the exact artists on these, but they're all concept drawings from "The Art of Cuphead" book. That game was what initially got me interested in learning to draw. Any feedback/criticisms welcome and appreciated. Thanks!
First of all, love the cuphead animation aesthetic. Maybe I should give it a go too! I think you capture the expressions well, particularly with the stump guy. One area of potential improvement I’’ noticing is that there isn’t a ton of variation in value when it comes to capturing depth. The contour lines specifically could be adjusted to make the look more 3 dimensional. Overall I see and enjoy the practice here!

Dave Malan master study! I don't have the angle of the view down enough but I think I did an alright job capturing a good approximation and likeness.

Feels very patchy to me. Don’t know the best way to unify the overall light and shadow forms simply following the outline
i made a few exceptions to these general principles. Specifically I went with a medium weight line through the underbelly as I felt it was a “grounding line” for the overall form

Really love the constructing with colored pencil idea. For some reason it really frees me up from attacking detail right away.
