This will be the same as every previous lesson, please follow along with me.

The lesson here is covering a looser version of the grid method with just a few lines to base everything off of.

The reference is in the downloads tab of this lesson.

I tried the simplified grid on my first attempt but it didn't work as well as the square grid in placing all the elemtents accurately so i just did a trace and transfer to block it in for my second attempt. The vine charcoal on my first attempt got too messy to erase cleanly. I also just used a black charcoal pencil on the second for cleaner lines. I'll probably paint that one so I'm not reworking proportions with paint.

My first time using the simplified grid. Definitely harder than the full grid.
Morgan Weistling
Yes, it does get harder and maybe you should use a little bit more grid until you’re more sure of yourself. There are definitely some issues with your proportions because you were not using more grid. If you haven’t gone forward with painting yet, I would suggest doing more grid and get a drawing that’s closer to the accuracy of your photo reference.

Gave it my best to not think about what im drawing. Looks okay right now, I'll look it over with fresh eyes tomorrow before spraying it.
Morgan Weistling
your vine charcoal looks to be too thick. You are not getting a precision drawing tool with the thicker sticks.
Debra Heard
Feels like her right arm is a little too small compared to the size of everything else. Didn't notice that until after I sprayed fixative. Lips too big too ( :
Morgan Weistling
too bad you sprayed it already but you can fix those things in the next stage
Michèle Girard
It's a bit off, I will look at it with fresh eyes.

This gave me a bit of a mental workout! I normally use a much tighter grid. Interesting to try out a different process and materials.
Morgan Weistling
you got a good start. I would suggest bring even more specific to the small abstract shapes now as you proceed. Don't let yourself go into your old default mode of using knowledge. Paint the shapes exactly as you see them.
