I learned a bunch of lessons with this painting. First off, never spray fixative late at night when you’re half asleep...big mistake. It dripped all over my canvas board, and I didn’t notice until halfway through the next day. Now that it’s dried, those splatters stick out like a sore thumb and really bug me. I uploaded two photos in different lighting (outside and indoor light), plus a third to show the fixative mess. None of them quite capture the real painting colors. Photographing art without glare is a skill of its own, and my lousy phone camera doesn’t help
Beyond all those hurdles, I think the face I painted came out rounder than the reference, and my halftones lean warmer than I intended. The chin could have better edge control in some spots and the hair under the hat looks a little sloppy, I really struggled to get clean shapes in that area. I'm sure there are many other things that need work but these stick out to me the most. Overall I would say I had fun doing this painting but if I'm having fun I must not be doing something right.

great job! there are some nice things happening here. The drawing is a little off on the size of her eyes but you stayed consistent so no one would know.

This took me a lot longer than the first one. I tried my best, but I’m kind of nervous about how the painting portion will go.

Hmm, I don't think I'm able to visualize the planes of the head while painting. I'm often unsure about the direction of my brushstrokes, which makes the process confusing at times. Was really trying to avoid it looking muddy. Also, I struggle to determine if I'm applying too much or not enough paint. But overall I've been learning a lot and any advice is greatly appreciated.

I took your painting and brought it along a little further by addressing small little edges that were still not softened enough, and therefore creating little sour notes that stood out. Overall, you were getting your edges pretty good. But when you don’t address all of them, the ones that are still a little too sharp or picky or look like lines will stand out. Try to go around with a fine tooth comb and knock out every little edge that needs to be soft or hard. I also cleaned up your half tones a little bit do a deep comparison between your image and what I did to it to learn more.

I'm starting to understand the power of edges more clearly now, but something still feels off when I look at him. I'm sure the yellow flesh tone does not help my situation.

I think I could have done a better job on the measurements and value control. Something about this one was extremely more challenging than the old man drawing.

Really enjoyed this "inside out" approach to drawing. I think I made the head a little too wide and some of the edges/values seem messy. I will say this was very exhausting on my brain, don't know how to explain it but I took a nap afterwards.

This assignment has helped so much in understanding the different types of edges and how to spot them when squinting.

This was my first attempt at any type of oil portrait. There are some things I like and some I don't like after letting it sit for a day or two. I'm still struggling with value, edges and how to properly mix flesh tones that are not yellow. But overall I'm happy with it and thank you Morgan for such a thorough guide. Such an amazing course.

You have some incredibly good things happening here, including your drawing that’s holding it together. In spite of the yellow skin it’s still working fairly well. Those of you who are getting too much yellow or pink simply are not adding enough black to the mixture to grey it down. You need to play with all of it to get a more tone. Try to get lost and soft edges in his scarf to finish this off and it will really sing.

Attempt #2 : I can't seem to stop making orange flesh tones, I even follow your exact steps. Going to try again. I feel as if mixing colors is a bigger battle than the actual painting.

Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about these. I think my light family has become a spray tan family. Seems very orange compared to your example. Will try again!
