I got the Conte a Paris Pierre Noire and I love the black color. However, mine tends to have some grit from time to time even after I sharpen it with a razor blade and sand paper. I’ll draw with it for a bit until I get that “scratchy” sound and I have to go onto some scratch paper to work it out. Do any of you have that issue? Or am I just not sharpening it correctly?

I have the same problem

Tried to apply some of the things I learned in the first lesson to some made up figures aswell as some from reference.

wasn't able to get in as many studies as I wanted but enjoyed the process and using charcoal for the first time in over a decade...or more

Great stuff, mileage is the key!

Messy first day🫠 will be working on 90gsm paper with an 8B graphite (closest that I have for now 😅). Loving all of the neat mnemonics!💯😃
Patrick Jones
Excellent, Mantas, you're drawing more than me today!

hello, feels messy and disproportionate but in time I should get a grasp also I realized the portraits aren’t part of the lesson but I used his approach so I felt compelled to share, lots of miles to go.

That's the way to do it, Lucas!

The first 20 minutes was worth 10 k in knowledge. I was like a kid with new toys. I didn't want to go to sleep. I wanted to keep playing. You are amazing, Patrick.

Apprentice here, just watched the first lesson and I'm really excited to get started! Will be drawing along later when I get more time however I don't have charcoal and have never used it before since I'm just starting out. Is it essential to work with charcoal to get the most out of this course? I'm comfortable with graphite pencil and mostly work with that for now but also trying to learn some other mediums namely ink, wash and gouache.
Patrick Jones
Hi Redbeard, any tools are fine, and encouraged. It all translates. Good luck!

If you’re looking for a good graphite pencil, the prismacolor ebony pencil one that I really like. You can sharpen it the same way as charcoal and it can make really dark marks.
@redbeardcory
Tried out the overhand grip with my mechanical graphite pencil. Pretty happy with the result, will need more time to get accustomed to the grip though.
