Apprentice here, just watched the first lesson and I'm really excited to get started! Will be drawing along later when I get more time however I don't have charcoal and have never used it before since I'm just starting out. Is it essential to work with charcoal to get the most out of this course? I'm comfortable with graphite pencil and mostly work with that for now but also trying to learn some other mediums namely ink, wash and gouache.

Tried out the overhand grip with my mechanical graphite pencil. Pretty happy with the result, will need more time to get accustomed to the grip though.

Hi all, I'm a beginner when it comes to drawing. I'm also working through the drawing basics course but character design and animation is really what I want to be doing which is why I'm here! A few pages into this assignment and I'm struggling a bit. I'm not sure how to approach turning these people that I'm seeing into characters! Any tips would be much appreciated! I'm trying to play with proportions a little and I think that's helping but they quickly turn into something a bit too basic and too far from what I'm seeing? Here's what I've got so far, a couple I'm pretty happy with, the rest not so much haha. (Also ignore the ink, was just playing around with a brush pen which I'll be using in my upcoming sessions)

Some more sketches from the train. I feel like I'm slowly getting more confident with faces but when it comes to full body I just fall apart, probably means I just need more mileage. I am starting to do gesture on the regular and I think it's building up my confidence with full body. Another problem I have is I also find it easier to copy what I see but struggle when trying to push some characterising aspect. I think the difference being when I'm drawing from observation alone something I'm analysing the perspective, looking at the shapes and values however when I want to change something it's like my mind reverse back to my skill level from before I really started learning to draw. @David Colman any advice would be much appreciated!

On struggle street here, any advice is appreciated. I am struggling with a few things at the moment as far as I can tell. I think the problem is getting stuck following the contour, and then when I realise I'm doing that and try to correct it I end up over simplifying and turning them into noodles. I'm planning on making this one a regular session and hopefully something clicks after some repetition!

Hello, I am still learning these concepts myself but here are some of my observations. It looks to me like you do have the basic idea. You are using similar Rhythms as Stan and are able to describe the pose with less detail so that is great! I would probably take more time on each individual pose and maybe do one per page as you are working with a small area. If you give your self more space you can be looser with your lines. I think you have some good lines in the top left pose, but it looks like you lose some of your line confidence with others. You really want to focus on your confident tapered lines and make them connect smoothly with each other. You may also still be focusing on individual details little to much. For example; the hair and guns on the person on the far right do not add to your gesture in anyway. They are in contrast to your flowing Rhythm lines. The guns cause an abrupt stop to the form of your arms and I don't think the Rhythm of the hands is clear enough. The hair looks more scribbly and you could describe it better with a single Rhythm line flowing off of the head. I think you are on the right track, but it takes a lot of practice to get comfortable with this idea. I look forward to seeing your future work!

Had a lot of fun with this, I find it quite therapeutic to do simple perspective like this. Can't wait for the next one!

A very fun exercise and also very revealing of how much I have left to learn! I feel like my chicken and hippo came out pretty good. However I felt I couldn't quite capture the expression/emotion of the buffalo, any tips there would be much appreciated. Then I went on to do a few more attempts of lions. One side profile which I thought was cute and the attempting to mess with the shapes to see the effect on personality of lions. The mane on them is weird to capture with a single line but you get the picture.

The yawning lion is extra cute! These all have some fun personalities. I really like the rooster too! The lion eyes look very catlike. I think the buffalo eyes could be more cowlike. Noticing the focus of the eyes can add more personality to your drawings. Heres a draw over to help you out. Nice stuff! Keep up the good work!

I think I've fallen in love with Claire Wendling's art now. I love the flowing lines. Most of the time the lines are quite soft and light however there are parts that get a little extra weight to them. I couldn't replicate the suttleness of the weight difference around the eyes and hair but I had a good crack. Proportions were really hard to replicate and I ran out of room but I think I started to get my lines to be a bit more true to the original towards the end (I did the girl on top last). Any feedback would be much appreciated! I think next study I'll pick a smaller piece or just focus on a small part of a piece so it's not so overwhelming with managing the proportions and I can focus on the lines only.

Did some more small studies of another claire wendling piece to fill out my sketchbook page. I think I did a lot better controlling the weight and thickness of lines this time.

Any feedback is appreciated. My attempt at level 1. Usually I'm working on digital but have been enjoying pencils lately!

This is a thorn bug. I began by playing around with horns but didn’t end up using it in the final version. But I did keep the pointy mouth and big eyes. I then began thinking about how he looked armoured like he was in a war or something and pushed that further with the little tin helmet Vietnam war style.
Martha Muniz
What a great pick! And you show great sketching line quality, nicely done. I would love to see more poses, I think this character could have some great actions and expressions to be explored. Maybe something in-action, like running away. Either way, good stuff! :)
