As discussed in the video, for your assignment - Choose a simple subject (apple, lime, orange, lemon, etc) and paint it in the iterative process of 8 versions of it. Try different timing setups; 3 minutes, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes. There will be different results by the time you finish them. You will also begin to notice a development of confidence and style after doing enough of these.
HARD MODE: Set up 5 different fruits (IN REAL LIFE, NOT PHOTO) with a light source (or two) on the scene -Paint however much you can in 30 minutes -Do it again until you have 4 paintings total. I PROMISE your later paintings will be better than your first painting. -You can cheat the system by going up to 8 times.
EPIC MODE: Using the same fruits as you would in Hard mode, invent a scene with floating fruits that look and feel realistic (or stylized) as long as it conveys light, form, shadow, and the illusion of reality. Let the objects cast shadows onto one another.
Did the normal mode exercise without a timer first and then did it with the recommended timers, it really pushed to make it more painterly.
In the hard mode exercise, I did the 4 painting from life (not photo) on Procreate and also added the photo of what I was painting.
After going through the timers, I had an easier time making the epic mode exercise more painterly and faster without a timer.
Awesome style and fun shapes! Don't be afraid to continue pushing the values, though, especially at the darkest/brightest spots. Even just darkening the area of cast shadow right underneath the object and brightening the highlight spot can really add to the illusion of 3-dimensionality.
I did 8 the still-life paintings, and I'm glad I pushed it from 4-8. I had my biggest breakthroughs on paintings 6-8.
I plan to keep doing fruit studies as warmups for the future of the course.
That was hard! I'm usually quite slow painter so learning about brush economy and becoming more efficient was really challenging, but I managed to dramatically improve my time by building big to small. It's cool to see how much you can simplify but still convey form and also seeing how repeated painting helps with designing and simplifying
Doing some revisions after watching the critique video
In my assignment I was a little caught up with the timer and wasn't as thoughtful with how I painted. I didn't push the colours as far as I could've and generally didn't experiment enough.
As suggested in the critique, I did some studies Karen O'neil (awesome artist) and learnt a lot about not only colours but also brush work and values. Highly recommended giving it a try.
I also did one more iterative painting with a pear, about 10 minutes per painting. I still didn't push as far as I'd like but I think its still a noticeable improvement over the previous ones
Some apples and oranges following along with the assignments. Some 10 minute apples, and some 30 minute still lifes. I'm not sure if my colour choices are working, but I'm enjoying experimenting and trying new things.
I'm not yet confident enough to do the 3 and 5 minute paintings, but I can see value in doing this. I'm going to commit to this exercise regularly. As Ahmed said repetition is key to learning, so I think it's worth doing hundreds of these.
Any feedback would be most welcome! Like I said I'm not sure about my colour choices, they may be a bit too warm overall. I have noticed that using a larger brush and trying to think about brush economy has led to less refined edges, which used to really bother me, but I've been leaving the edges along unless I need to smudge them in the edges, and it actually seems to work.
Art is the conveyance of fundamental human truth, regardless of barriers attempting to conceal it.
