After watching the demo of importance of line weight I am very confused. Stan is drawing exactly like he has told us not to. His fingers are scrunched down near the point of the pencil and instead of making a single, swift confident line, he is making short repeated sketch marks as he has told us not to do. I wish we could ask questions.

he is doing a more detailed version of a drawing in a compact space therefore he needs to use the movement of his hand and fingers more. However you should start sensing the difference even while doing so. You can use your wrist and feel the movement on your shoulder, or thats what I apply when working, try focusing on that.

Hello everyone, here is my attempt with the boots. I'm not sure if I'm the only one in this situation, but I felt really overwhelmed by the amount of information when I had to draw the laces, I really struggled to organize it all. If anyone has any advice, I'm all ears. :) And by the way i did it on Krita.

I was overwhelmed also. Too much detail.

Nice simplicity.

I have never tried such a way to draw. But I am satisfy with the first result. I would appropriate for some feedback.

I think you did a good job capturing the contour lines.
@terryh
At first I wasn’t even going to attempt the laces. But I stepped away and returned the next day, tackling one lace at a time. As someone who wants to learn to paint looser and with less detail, this assignment didn’t bring me any closer to that goal, but then that wasn’t the purpose of this assignment. I hope I learned something.

I have to remind myself that I'm just a beginner. lol. One thing I feel like I struggle with is making satisfying looking strokes using the pencil. I feel like they are so fuzzy. I am left handed and tend to draw with the side of the tip of the pencil. I think I should be drawing straight down on the point. Does anyone have an insight with that that they can share? Also, I try to draw right do left, but that's impossible. I smudge my paper sooo much and that gets frustrating.

I shade with the side of the pencil. Just try it in different ways. Try keeping your hand off the paper to prevent smudging. Try to avoid resting your hand on the paper.
@terryh
I only have one pencil, so it was hard to create the different values. I thought we were supposed to show the lines, so I would make most of them lighter now that I have watched the demo. Some shapes are not correct.

This is a pretty solid start and good for using just the one tool. That's a hard challenge when you're first learning! You have good shape simplification in here, especially on the bottom left shadow shape that a lot of people might choose to make more detailed when the point of this is the simplification. Good job on making intentional block in choices when you were starting the drawing. That helps this to feel like a confident drawing. No other notes from me here!
