Ok. Keeping it simple. I still haven't mastered the layers lesson but I keep trying to find my way but this is a whole new level of F*** yeah! I made some use of that Hard Mix painting lightly with a soft brush to introduce something unexpected into the hues in the hair and it just made it work so well! I added some blue with overlay under the skin to give it that extra something. Really pleased with the result. Color dodge to push the brights Color layer to bring int he skin tone in the greyscale stage: Flatted skin with 50% grey for local Multiply on the shadow layers using 50% (2 layers first for reflected light, second for darker shadow masses) My mid-tones were done in overlay at 50% and I adjusted value with opacity Highlights were also overlay.

I knew nothing about blending modes before, this is my first try.... It's a big orange blob! :D I like how the sword turned out though.

i have no idea what i am doing with these yet i could not make the skin look normal no matter what i tryed but i guess i got a different cool effect.

Dear all, I tried different approaches to colorize after rewatching the demo of this section. 1st pic, This was done after I finished 2nd pic. I used a flat orange color as base then added a shadow brown color using multiply layer. The shadow layer was then readjusted to a bit more red on hue and 10% less saturated and10% more brightness, as I found the effect actually looks cool. I added a really light blue for the planes facing toward light using overlay. And then the rest basically follow the demo process, using color doge to add rim light and highlight. Added a bit red on the cheek. I mainly used soft edge brush and dual edge brush for both painting and smudging. 2nd pic. I used my grayscale as a base, then use the same flat orange color to colorize, with the color layer. Overlay with the dark brown color for shadow and used a yellowish color for the highlight. hence the result. Honestly, I am less confused with how these paintings come out. The problem is both are not the skin texture I am chasing here... They either looks like a face with copper as surface, or something metallic. Lol. Definitely an interesting experience

Here is another example of color work from a previous project. I find this method of color editing both fun and efficient. It makes it easy to explore a vast array of options. I'm still working on all this in Krita because it's free. I achieved the clearest version by adding a layer in divide mode.

In this piece, I only used the Overlay blend mode (to add color), the Multiply blend mode (to darken certain areas), and the Linear Dodge tool (to lighten others). I find this a very practical way to color. It’s also very easy to preserve the original tones and achieve a believable result. I definitely need to explore this further, but it’s a first attempt.

my 2nd submission after watching the demo. Tried to do environment this time First time in my life to use color in drawing/painting. Got me confused with the whole hue and saturation. I guess because the reference is really good, my painting didn't looks too weird. I tried to simplify the cloud as much as possible and just go with flow. But honestly, I am not too sure on what I am doing. For the foreground, I used basically 1 color and initially that layer was in color mode which makes it looks golden, but for some reason, overlay turns out to be a better choice after scrolling through the blending mode options. The blending mode is really interesting but confusing at the same time. Frankly, colorizing the grayscale seems more fun and looks like can bring the most out of the blending mode.

Seeking advice: I ve been doing some digital paintings over the last 2-3 months from time to time and I just finished this one. I only used 2 bending modes here: Multiply (to darken some shadows) and Screen( to lighten the different things). I am still trying to understand different blending modes, but at the same time I dont think I need to use that much? I struggled more in speeding up my painting process. This is my 15 th piece since I started this course and I still struggle in bending... I am using the dual-edge brush (the double-sided) from the brush pack Jon gave (I experimented with a lot more brushes than in my last post; still think that one is the best) and use the smudge tool (soften edges) to speed up. I watched Jon's demo; just trying to observe and learn and also try to solve the problem on my own. Still, it took me 16 hours to complete the paintings below. Could you guys give me some advice on how to speed up the bending process? Or what would you focus when you are watching someone's demo?

It was fun. I practiced using Blending modes Lighten and Multiply.

I tried to spend less time on setup and more on the lessons content this time. So I grabbed an older grayscale project I had and started to lay in the flats. In hindsight I should have spent more time with the flats I think. Something that helped me with painting the shadows layer: TURN OFF PRESSURE SENSITIVITY! You want to paint in the shadow areas with consistent opacity and leave gradients only for the soft edges. I kept painting over and over to fill in the shadow area evenly as my pressure sensitivity required me to use many strokes until an area was filled. This meant that it was difficult to get a clean hard edge and difficult to get a consistently smooth gradient. My painting became A LOT LESS MUDDY after turning off pressure sensitivity and keeping it at 100% and focusing on drawing the correct shadow edge with as few strokes as possible. I'm not happy with the result but I feel like I am finding the sources of my frustration and tackling them one by one.

Here is my assignement, I decided to take one of my earlier drawing and reshade him in a more" realistic " way. I'm more confortable working with a "cel-shaded" style, so it's always a bit daunting to put the firsts smooth brushstrokes. Butanyway, it was a fun assignement !

This took me way too long and I ended up with way many layers. And many time was layed on figuring out on Wich layers some scrap lines or dont i wanted to erase were on. I think i rather use auto actions i learned from another course with lights shadows and everything in there so it helps to stay organised. To this i wanted to make a cyberpunk scene and then i wanted to make something my own. Also a opportunity to practice drawing from imagnination especially whole scenes. Because its something i feel very hard. Its like i have a big hurdle to get over to begin. I just used some loose references

I found that overlay was my best friend for adding color. I don’t quite have the knack for the other modes yet but I’ll keep practicing.

First try playing around colorising with blending modes in Procreate

I had some bad luck with this one. I had one idea of what i wanted to do but it wasnt coming together so I scrapped that. which was about a weeks worth work. Then i switched to a different idea since i thought i could do better with it, which is what i posted. But after working on it for a almost a month the file got corrupted when I got a random power surge. So I had to completely restart. so another few weeks worth of work I got it done finally. I know there are issues with it but I think its time to move on and work on the other assignments before i fall too behind. Maybe I'll come back to it and fix it up. But I did get plenty of time to play around with layer modes :p

So this is my second piece for the assignment. This is a spell caster image I created for the assignment. I worked in layers and used the different blending modes for the highlights, shadows, magic, etc… I love how quickly you can change colors and tweak things when the layers all work together. I used the hue and saturation on the color layers and pretty quickly came up with a few different looks.

I’m working in procreate so some things are slightly different. Some of the names are changed, but the concepts are the same. I decided to try coloring one of my grayscale paintings using multiple layers and different blending modes. This is a screenshot of some of the layers. I need to get better at labeling and organizing as I go. But this is cool stuff.

This assignment popped up while I was working on a painting trying to sum up everything I learned about art in the past 3 years, so I decided to "merge" both. I did a new painting in greyscale, and using blending modes to color it. I also used blending modes for painting, adjustments, adding a few textures and the effects on the blade. - Textures were added (on the bridge and trees) using overlay - Colors were added with gradient maps with the color blending mode - The effects on the blade were added using the technique Jon showed with Linear Dodge (layer + brush in the mode) - Some details were added using either overlay, multiply or screen (mostly where they had to be used on top of something that had already some shading) This took me 4 weeks and was draining but I'm proud of the result. Altough a lot of the time was "lost" on trying to understand the details of the character, Sekiro. (a lot of small details overlap each other). I also learned a lot by making "bad" decisions during the process and understanding their consequences, which I hope will speed me up for the next paintings. I am posting the finished painting, the "refined" sketch, and the WIP right before I started coloring.
