Let’s move from line drawings to adding light and shadow by viewing the head's features as basic forms: boxes, cylinders, and spheres. Each form has a corresponding edge quality—soft for spheres, firm for cylinders, and hard for boxes. By linking these edges with light and shadow, we create a more natural and realistic look. The key is to map core shadows and edges, then replace lines with edges to guide the viewer's eye, enhancing depth and realism.

I've improved my construction a lot the last few days. I've realized the obvious that I need to get the shape right first. This is my first time shading anything. You can be brutal.
Michael seemed to block off large areas of shadow and then add different levels of shadow in and around them. I've tried to do that, although I found that areas of shadow to block in on this portrait not numerous. I then constantly moved between my brush and eraser tool to add darker or lighter shadows in and around those blocks. I wasn't quite sure what to do with the hair though. I feel like I screwed up the eyes too. There are lots of little details, so I had to use a really small brush to bring the outlines out or lighten things up with the eraser.
Did I do it right? Am I missing something?

Trying another model. This is hard. I'm not sure where to go from here. Also, I feel like Michael does the core shadows really easily, with just one stroke. I need to go over a stroke multiple times in order to darken it. I'm not sure how to adjust the software to replicate that.

small update. I found the eye and nose bridge were weird.

i used this project to combine my value studies from Stan Prokopenko Basics course, but I didn't quite understand how to add facial features correctly, maybe I'll watch this shading video again 😅

A practice of the 8 steps method for the drawing with this reference portrait.
Then a new attempt at shading. First the base values with a work on edges. Then I tried to push a little further and tackle the rendering of details, but not across the entire portrait

To conclude this wonderful course, a trial of digital shading, focusing on edges. There is still a lot of work to do but I have learned so much thanks to Michael's method!

Done, such a good course. Learned a ton these weeks and I love all the easy ways to remember the proportions. Halves and thirds simple and clean, clear and concise teaching style. Big thank you Steven for making this.
Now I'm looking forward to an Anatomy course that goes more in depth than the figure construction course ;) Take care :)

Not sure if you will see this but did you end up taking his figure construction course before or after the portrait course? and what order would you recommend if so?

I just finish this course and it was incredible! I learned a lot and the video instructions are clear. It is worth the price.

This month I spend some time on practicing head construction and shading. This 11-step method is so efficient that I can even finish head drawings. This lesson let me understand better about shading. Here is a drawing according bonus lesson. Thank you very much, Mr. Hampton!

I would like to thank Michael Hampton on his excellent instructions. I know that I still have much to learn, but before this class I could have never drawn this portrait.

Just wanted to share my latest light and shadow drawing I haven’t really dealt with midtones yet but I got close too matching the form with this one except the neck. I will keep practicing, one thing that has been tripping me up is expressions especially this hinging of the jaw and trying add asymmetry along with it

Great lesson. Took my drawing from the Fully Constructing a Head from Scratch lesson and followed along.
Thanks Michael, do you have any new courses in the pipeline? In the meantime I will contruct more heads and also return to the figure contruction course.

Nicely done!
Actually, I did record a course on Gesture drawing that should release through Proko at some point.
Otherwise, really nice work. Keep it up
