Using the line drawings that we've provided (or new ones of your own) paint new pieces using the materials that we went over in the previous lessons. We will provide reference photos for you to download and paint from as well. Painting from lineart of little monsters will help you abstract the structure of the character and let you focus on understanding the material property vs making the painting look like a specific object.

If you want to push yourself, find some references of other materials you'd like to investigate and paint those as well. There are so many materials to explore and the best way to add them to your visual library is to practice finding new materials that you're interested in and making pieces studying them. We may have even included some fun bonus material references in the downloadables.

If you do find new materials to paint from, post the reference with your assignments so we can give you better critiques!

Submit your assignments by May 24th if you'd like a chance to be included in the critique video.

Did couple of different materials. These can be done pretty quick and they are fun? One thing about the winegum. I strongly think, by observing, that the light enters the material and lights ob the surface where it would exit the material. My winegum one already does this but i tried to exaggerate this effect in winegum2. Plus I added the glow on the table.

I’m pretty new to painting of any type, so I didn’t completely know what I was doing. But I had fun, and really enjoyed this lesson!

I was able do two more.

The turtle I painted looks like cola candy! I have to study how to analyze and render those textures on rocks. I like the expression of the guy with a magic wand.

A really fun assignment! I'll definitely have to practice more. Also I loved this little character. His eyes are kinda unhinged and I felt like I was probably making the same face while doing the reflections in the metal haha.

I love these. This character is so awesome.

Really enjoyed this assignment. It was challenging but satisfying watching the lil monsters become various materials. I tried out one bonus material cause it looked like a lot of fun, but I honestly had no idea what I was doing when it came to rendering glass and I think it shows haha

This series of lessons about materials is challenging but helpful. I always wonder how to render metal objects! The bone object I rendered looks more like clay or jelly rather than a plastic bone. I'll upload drawings of the other three materials later!

Making reflection on a copper mushroom surface was so hard.

Great exercise!

These lessons were great! I did the 7 materials covered in the example videos. I feel like the dark ceramic material came out the worst. I think it's because I wasn't sure how the light would hit the bottom half of the mushroom creature since the cap would block the light. The most difficult was the bronze material, for a while the reflection just looked like some weird pattern painted on the surface, but I think once I started curving the reflected image to follow the object's form the illusion started to work.
Anthony Hernandez
I tried some more with the dark ceramic material, lightened the top half a bit, added a little more orange color (bounce light from the table) to the bottom, and fixed the shadow.
Sean Ramsey
These are nice! The copper/metal material's reflections are really good. It really feels like it's in an environment. For the Mushroom character, I think you're right that the shadow not being on the ground is probably making it feel floaty. You might try a version where the whole lower section on the bottom side of the cap and below are in shadow and it could fix that feeling. Good job!
