  • 5 Form breakdowns from the provided Reference image (courtesy of StudioGrafit!) 
    You can find the files in the first part of this lesson. 
  • Invent 10-15 skulls, be sure to include the following;
  1. Starting with the Cranium shape
  2. Jaw horseshoe/magnet shape
  3. Browridge
  4. Nasal Cavity
  5. Cheekbones
  6. Eye Sockets
  7. Barrel of the Mouth
  8. Chin
  • Then introduce lighting on each one, from any directions. 

 

  • HARD MODE: (Do this ONLY if you want to get REALLY good)
    -Pick 1 skull from the reference provided, and much like in the Apple lesson, paint it 8 times in 5 minute intervals. 
    -Do this again with 3 more skulls 

  • EPIC MODE:
    Using 3 skull reference images, draw a composition of floating skulls with a single light source from the top. Allow them to cast shadows onto each other. Consider ALL the things discussed in the rendering lessons; form, core shadows, bounce light, etc.

I was a bit rushed here. Next time, I should take a bit more time to develop the skulls further.

Got burnt out part way though the 15 invented skulls, so I took some time away and things went better. All in all, lots of practice juggling the hard brush, pressure opacity, and air brush. And I'm happy with how these are turning out especially considering my initial forays into digital painting.

Here's my skulls! I think I got decent at rendering the planes and overall forms but I still have a lot to learn with all the little anatomical details and the organic shapes I also tried doing the hard mode challenge but I'm far too inefficient to do it under 5 minutes and struggled even doing it in 10. I think I'll come back to it when I'm a little more efficient/better at simplifying

Doing revisions after watching the week 2 critiques. Main areas for improvement were: * Having clearer light/shadow value groupings * Increasing contrast for better readability * For the invented skulls, the cranium tended to be too boxy, the jaw too small/squished and didn't extrude out far enough I did some paint overs, and I think they're looking better now!

2nd time doing the course. Spent a LOT of time studying the planes of the skull more in-depth. For anybody having trouble like me or who haven't started yet, I recommend actually moving onto the next lesson and watching all the videos in "Skulls Without Reference." Ahmed goes over more in the next lesson about building the skull. Watch all those vids and then come back to do this lesson, don't skip this. You got this. Also check out 3D models of skulls online. There are some you can move around right in your browser. Proko has these models but they're apart of the portrait fundamentals course... not sure if they're unlocked free of charge but do go on the course page to see. Helps with understanding forms

I found this assignment immensely difficult. Seems like something I'll have to constantly practice. For now I plan on moving on to the next section.
