I am learning to work with shape language to design readable Character Designs. At the second Image you can read what I intended the shape language to be for. Whether I succeeded or not I another thing. So I would like to hear your options, on the Ideas that I had for the character design, but also what I should have done to improve the concept that I did in the end. Because I think that I should have exaggerate some elements of the character even more to highlight that characteristic. Thank you for your Advice's.

My Goal is to Instinctively draw scenes in different perspective. But my first step to that goal is, probably to create images were the environments are in proportion to the characters and objects in the surrounding.

Hey Nicola, I agree with @Crystal Blue (she/her) , This image is suffering from being kind of confusing. I felt it would be easier to do a sketch to show you what I think you could do to clarify things a bit from a drawing standpoint. I hope you find it helpful :)

you make a solid point, I didn‘t thought of that, that the impact influenced the person absorbing it. It would have made the painting so much more dynamic. Also to show the whole body to understand the entire pose. Next time I will look out for that. Here is the underdrawing to the painting.

It's coming along nicely! here are my thoughts: - The composition is leading my eye to the face of the guy with the red hair, so consider putting more contrast in that area to make it more interesting I personally think that adding brighter brights in the purple to have some kind of glowing effect would look good - It's somewhat hard to tell what's going on with the blond woman's legs. Make sure her outfit follows the form of her butt, right now it looks really flat. I'm also not sure about her left leg, I feel like it would be really hard to twist that way. Maybe have her bend her leg at her knee instead of it bending back at the hip (does that make sense? I can clarify if it doesn't hope that helps =)

Thank you for your nice advices, I will keep them in mind while painting. I agree with you to make the focal point stand out more, with a stronger contrast. Also why the shadow areas felt so flat, is probably because I haven‘t applied the reflected light in the shadow areas. For the drawing I broke the rules to make the the idea work, but I see the point I could have also make it work without breaking the rules. So far my progress, I sill have to incorporate your suggestions at some areas.

Right now I have a fun time drawing together on a fan art, it is still in the process. Because I am not really used to painting, it is still hard for me to know how to improve the painting or painting process. I know that some things are sill missing like the reflected light or cast shadow at the character in the front, to be completed. Please any suggestion on improving the work flow or mistakes at the painting to look out for in the future are welcome. painting process (dividing shadow and light, painting in halftone direct light areas looking for ambient occlusion areas)

Hi, I made some 1 minute gesture drawings and one to try to reduce the details. I hope that you can give me some feedback on my drawings and on what to I should pay more my attention on while drawing. Also if you could give some other advice on methods, how to challenge myself in gesture drawing, to get a better understanding of the human figure.

Hi Nicola! You are definitely on the right track and doing really well. It takes time to get comfortable doing these. Most of your standing figures look well balanced. I always tell people to look for the weight of the pose in relationship to the head to find it's balance. You did it well. If you want to challenge yourself you could decide to put more time in the torso lets say and leave the legs with one simple line to show overall flow of pose. Leaving the legs simplified like that gives us more time to add more form in the torso. I like doing that and it's fun to change it up

Good job with this exercise! I really like the ones with more structure, they feel a little stiff but i think you made some good choices at the moment of adding some structure. With the gesture exercises I think that you are relying too much in the contour specially in the legs. Although it might sound abstract the idea of the gesture is to capture the movement of the body and not the forms of the contour. Maybe this comments/exercises are useful to you: - Remember to use the CSI rule to keep your line simple, if the body if flowing in a more complicated manner construct that complexity base in this three simple kind of lines. - Although the 1 minute gesture is suppose to be done in one minute, you still can pause the time and study carefully your reference. Ask yourself what are the biggest lines in the figure, what describe better the movement of the body, and try to draw a gesture that you would like to obtain in one minute. Then you can come back to the usual practice of one minute gesture. - You can also play with the amount of line you allow yourself to use to draw the gesture. This exercise might help you think about how to simplify the the body. For example try to do a gesture using at most 5 lines. Hope these comments help you!
