this assignment was so intimidating that i procrastinated on it for several weeks and did the whole Drawabox lesson 1 in the meantime :D i had to give myself permission to just do one quick very bad study and move on with the course so that i'm not stuck.
this is after Dave Malan; his style is very close to how i'd like to draw. i watched a Youtube video of him drawing, but a lot of it is still mystery to me. i used a thin mechanical pencil for this one, just like he does.
somehow i struggle with everything a lot. the changing sharpness of the pencil between strokes; controlling the pressure and getting very light strokes; getting a taper at the start of the stroke; the dynamic range (somehow Malan gets both very dark and very light tones with a single pencil hardness and Stan does too in the previous project demos).
the pencil is still somehow an alien object to me. if anyone has thoughts, i'll appreciate them.

David Malan is a master of his craft. I think removing expectations of outcome with this exercise is probably the approach -- to take the pressure off and maximize the benefits of doing a master study.
It looks like you carefully studied this drawing and made some great observations on areas where you can explore further. Follow those paths and see where they take you!
That is a wonderful spider-man pose and arm overall. Everyone knows how hard hands and fees are so to get them to bend correctly is wonderful, again, GREAT job!

i struggled with the shoelaces and how much i should simplify them. in the end i lost patience a little bit. next time i might just make up more of the shoelaces to convey the effect rather than exact details

2 attempts. i bought proper sharpening tools before the 2nd one so the shading seems slightly better. proportions seem slightly better too but accurate measuring with a pencil is still a bit of a mystery to me
