Very late to the party as usual but oh well. I have tried to do a study of drawings from Dave Malan and Glen Keane. Both showed me how I can use line weight to sketch, especially Glen Keane. Very interesting.
Martha Muniz
Hey there! You chose two great examples. For the Dave Malan study, notice how he always uses his hatching to indicate the plane of the surface, giving lots of information about the 3D structure of the subject. For example, around the nose, the hatching indicates the entirety of the bottom surface, as if it were almost like a pyramid or cone structure. I recommend you take a look at the Asaro head, which is a breakdown of the head structure into more simple planes, as I think you'll find it a very insightful reference for faces and simplification. As for the Glen Keane study, he's the master of fluidity and gesture in his linework. If you look closely at his strokes, you'll see how each line he puts down flows throughout its entirety with intent--he never breaks in the middle to start over. In his sketches, he simply puts down the line repeatedly if he feels the need for it. I think this is something you could emulate: instead of going back and forth with small lines or breaking and starting over in the middle of an edge, try putting the line down from start to finish--even if it's not perfect. It doesn't need to be perfect as you can always try the same stroke again, but aim to capture that looseness and confidence in his line quality first. Great job and keep it up! Hope this helps :)

I don't have any printers available to me, so I had to sketch the rhino. But this is what I think the line arrangement is for the LVL 1 project.

Some Before/After demo. I realised that I wasn't sketching before but just copying what I saw.

I'm still uncomfortable with drawing from imagination, so this exercise was fun and challenging! I'll go over the designs more after watching the demo.
@mikriarktos
I love how you built the frogs step by step. I definitely forgot that part for my drawing lol
@mikriarktos
What to say ... Drawing by imagination is a huge weakness for me. I find it insanely hard. I had tried to draw some monkeys with references before the cats, but that was catastrophic, lol. I need to work on that.
@drawingdodo
That's what we're here for, to learn! Hope this didn't de-motivate you to continue drawing from imagination, it's a complicated skill, but one that improves with deliberate practice!
@mikriarktos
Hello, late again, sorry. It was a very fun exercise for me, as I love sketching. I completely messed up the hand, the VR Girl is alright, but I am very pleased with the Penguin ! Will watch the demo and try to fix stuff, thanks
@mikriarktos
Before and After the demo. I know my lines are not very clean but it'll come with more training. I also realised that I did not simplify things enough before the demo.
@mikriarktos
Before and After the demo. I realise now that I could have made things much simpler lol
@mikriarktos
Very late to the party but oh well. Could have made some things simpler I think.
