I did the boots before I watched the demo and the snail after. The demo was really helpful in getting me to think about shape outlines in particular.
Matt Wilding
I did this again after watching, this time with an image of a butternut squash. I actually think I got worse!

I think it has to do with how you are distributing your values. It seems like this photo is low key, meaning the area of focus and detail is in the shadows, rather than the light. Most of the area of squash visible here is in the shadow/low-light area, save for the small area on top hit directly by light, so I suggest keeping to your last 3 dark values for the larger area, and keeping the same light value for the background as seen in the photo. This should help you better capture the lighting situation for this image. Also, watch for any gaps in your hatching visible from a distance or when squinting, to prevent them from impacting the clarity of your values. Hope this helps!

Here are mine simple assingments

I think a thing to look out for is lines in relation to other lines. Particularly on the right boot, if you use other lines in the boot as a guide (like what certain parts align with higher up, to the left/right, etc), I think you’ll find your line relationships will be stronger.
Matt Wilding
I feel like my lines were not confident enough on this one.

Matt!!! Nice job, I actually think this is a fantastic base to do a second pass with some confidence! Finding the proportions with construction and designing the shapes and finding overlap is usually my first steps. I would try throwing a piece of tracing paper over this and using a different pencil (something like a tapered bullet shape woodless pencil) and finding ways to pull lines that are thick to thin to bring parts of this fantastic drawing forward, find rhythms between certain flowing lines and simplifying even MORE! I really think you have an eye for proportion, great job on this assignment. Keep it up!

The first drawing I did digitally, before watching the demo. The second I did on paper, after watching the video.
Matt Wilding
Looks great. Your digital one is fantastic.

My angles are slightly off, but all things considered I feel like this went well. I'd be happy to hear thoughts from others.

Nice perspective :D

Hi Matt, To me you got the angles quiet right. What I do think, considering the exercise, is that your lightest value in de shadow can be a bit darker. I have the feeling that its value is competing with the values in the light. You might even darken the halftone a bit to make it stand out a little bit more. You can even, if you want to, darken the cast shadow in order to connect it to the shadowside of the pear. I hope this is helpfull.

Very nice! I like how you got the different dark shades in the shadow. I see a darkness around the base of the pear but not on the drawing. I didn’t see the line in the pear until I saw it in the drawing, great eye for seeing that.

First time drawing as an adult. Thank you

Good first effort!
