I'll be going live to answer questions and talk about painting while I play a pre-recorded clip from my Classical Portraiture Techniques and Concepts course. The clip is focused on the color sketch portion where I show you how I study a composition before I get into a painting.

Can I apply your course if I work acrylics?

Concepts like value and construction, drawing etc... will all apply. I would suggest to use something like Golden's "Open" acrylics as they will stay wet much longer.

Hey, thanks for the Livestream, it was a lot of fun and very informative :)
I painted along but didn’t get as far. It is my first oil painting since I was a child/early teenager (and even then it was mostly acrylic, but some oil as well, then unfortunately there was a very long break with nearly no painting at all), so probably I should have started with something simpler to get familiar with the medium. I struggled quite a bit not to mud the colors, oftentimes I wanted to make a transition and got too much dark into the lighter areas or vice versa. And I think I got too much paint on the canvas too soon, which you mentioned in the stream, could be a problem, which it was for me I guess, so I just tried to make the best out of it. But next time I’ll keep that in mind.
Any tipps on how to proceed? I let it dry over night, but it is still quite wet (even in the areas where the paint is thinner). Should I let it dry more/completely before continuing, or can I go on as is?
I’ll be happy for any advice :)

It's all about value adjustment now. On the light side of the face you should key the values of the half tones to the highlight.

Hi Stephen I recently finshed my BFA in Glass and am in the process of exporing painting with glass (frit) and enamels on fused glass. Have you expored using other mediums in your artistic painting practise? I miss drawing and painting, yet made a rather significant investment in my glass practise and studio.

Leaving a test comment for Proko. Question was: What part of your usual process might be considered unconventional or unexpected to other painters, if any?

You mentioned you don't use solvent to clean your brushes, but only clean them with soap - so I assume at the end. So how do you deal with that during a painting session to avoid colour/value contamination?

You seem to get your drawings to a very defined realistic state. What do you think about artists like Fechin or even our contemporary WLOP and what they do with implying things with simple brushstrokes? Does it take being able to do what you do to then get more abstract or can you study directly to learn that?

can you have a style of values or are values organized by your style of painting?

How indept do you think we need to know about anatomy to draw or paint the human body? Do I need to learn to draw or can I just go into painting the human figure with a basic understanding of drawing?

How in-depth? He mentioned this earlier, you might have some luck going back about 20 minutes!

Hello Stephen! Is there a reason you are using a wood pallet instead of a gray pallet for your paint?

Q1. How to handle multiple brushes in hand during an oil painting when you are working with multiple values?
Q2. What color can be in a limited pallet but still covering secondary color like Orange, purple, Magenta etc?
Q3. Is it good idea to use a painting as a reference photo?

I have trouble seeing what the colors actually are in flesh. So I never achieve subtle transition tones and all my portraits look too graphic. I’m tempted to concentrate on landscapes. I don’t have access to live models…what do suggest I can do to improve using photographic references?
