Warmup - Mushrooms

Course In Progress

Hey guys, before we dive into the line category of the course, I want to share a fun exercise to warm up your hand and get you comfortable with drawing fluid lines. While doodling with my son, he asked me to draw a Mario mushroom, and I realized it's a perfect way to practice ellipses.

You don’t want to practice the exact same mushroom each time. So make sure to vary your ellipses to get the most out of this warmup. Change the angle, proportions, and size on the page.

Benefits of the Exercise

Keep in mind these two key factors while you practice your mushrooms.

  • Pressure Control: By making certain parts of the ellipse darker where they are visible and lighter where they wrap around, you practice controlling your line pressure.
  • Placement and Alignment: Aligning the ellipses correctly on the page enhances your ability to place shapes precisely.

Tips for Effective Practice

  • Vary Proportions: Don't aim for a perfect Mario mushroom. Play with proportions to keep it fun and to practice different ellipses.
  • Visualize Before Drawing: Imagine each ellipse before putting pencil to paper. Ghost the motion in the air to prepare.
  • Use Your Whole Arm: Even for small shapes like the eyes, use your whole arm to draw smooth ellipses.
  • Relax Your Grip: If your hand starts to hurt, you're gripping the pencil too tightly. Keep a relaxed grip to avoid strain.
  • Avoid Cleaning Up: Don't go back over lines to fix or darken them. Focus on executing each ellipse in a single, fluid motion.

Practicing ellipses doesn't have to be tedious. By incorporating them into fun drawings like Mario mushrooms, you make the learning process enjoyable and engaging. Don't rush, imagine each ellipse, ghost it in, and then execute the stroke. Keep practicing until you're comfortable, and if you find this challenging, try doing it every day to build muscle memory. Go ahead and give it a try, and feel free to share your pages. We'll be starting the line category very soon!

Was pretty hard to make the lighter side at first but got a bit better as it went on

This warmup is pretty hard. I suck at drawing circles lol. Also I drew a kirby because I saw a bunch of other people doing the same.

A challenging warmup but a fun one! Pressure in the correct spots is really challenging for me. I am using a 4H though, could that be part of it? Also a couple of kirbys for fun.

I had fun with this warm up. I can feel my hands getting looser as I draw the ellipses. Ghosting it before drawing it helps a lot, and going a littler slower than stan helps me as I am new with this.

exercise was tough initially but became more fun after warming up and more practice. Also I was struggling using my arms on a smaller sketchbook but became easier once I switched to a bigger sketchbook.

2 things are helping me with this exercise: 1) slow down much more than you think you need to. ignore Stan P's speed because we beginners aren't at that level of pencil dexterity yet; 2) do this for several days in a row and you will see more improvement. My mushrooms now, vs a week ago, are much better. Yeah, I can imagine that if you're doing this on a small pad, it's harder. on a big pad you can support your hand easier

Mushrooms! Kinda messed up the first few before I got into the rhythm and I definitely need more practice on altering the strength of a line while drawing.

Definitely see a great improvement from the first to the last, nice loosening up! Keep it up the good work :)

I need to work on my photo lighting lol. But here's some warm ups, also figured some Kirby is a fun way to mix it up

Whoa! deceptively hard. It looks so simple, but drawing even ellipses, centered correctly AND varying the line weight correctly is really hard. Great exercise.

This was really hard! But I started getting better the more i did. I just found it challenging to connect the head shape to the hat. it was hard to keep it centered.

Nice! I definitely see a progression in looseness and line confidence. Especially in the ones where you draw all the way through the circle multiple times over, I think those are the most successful when it comes to capturing good sketching habits. Keep up the good work! :)

Here are my mushrooms! I may have outlined one before I realized we weren't supposed to do that haha. So I ended up using that as a reference for which parts of the ellipses should be darker and lighter. I'm surprised by how fun this exercise made drawing ellipses!

I find this exercise very difficult because my ellipses and not good. I figured out some tricks to help me in my learning: - Do small ellipses first then move on to bigger ones. - Even if not that fun, I don't care doing only ellipses most of the time for now. I find this less frustrating and this way it is more encouraging to see my progress each day. - Once more statisfied, practice more the mario mushroom excercise.

Is it just me, or do they seem scared ^^? I put some eyebrows on some of them and it's funny how that small detail changes their expression. Very fun exercice

The eyebrows are great 😂

Behold, the mushrooms. This little warmup was actually very difficult for me, which kind of surprised me because it's just a variety of ellipses. I definitely need to practice drawing those steadily. Also for some reason I became extremely aware that I was gripping that pencil like my life depended on it. Like what did my pencil do to deserve that? Anyway, despite the difficulties this makes drawing ellipses so much more fun and I'll for sure be doing more of these to practice ♡
