This is my first sculpt for this course. I recently attented a 5 hour workshop for model making using Chavant NSP but the tutor recommended Monster Clay for continuing my own exploration. The workshop was enough to get my interest, I've worked a little with Fimo before but like the idea that oil-based clays can be reworked, and taking casts for anything that I think worthy (or for experience). For this sculpt I used Monster Clay and didn't use the foil core as shown in the demo (as I was sure I wanted to reclaim the clay from a first attempt!). The clay was still quite soft from being heated a little to get it out of the tray, and I think this meant that the sculpt was too inclined to relax the pose as worked. I found it tricky to try and match the pose to the reference images, so need to work on that more. I decided to stop at this point, as I felt there were too many mistakes building up so will take another go.

Hey looking good for an early study for the course! Yeah finding the type of clay you prefer is a good thing and I prefer Chavant nsp medium to Monster clay but both are great and common clays for sculpting. Keep sculpting and I look forward to seeing your progress throughout the course!

Hi, first post for the 5$ Sculpture assignment! I used school-grade plasticine that is found at local store (around 1.5$ in my country), and a modified old ballpoint pen with a wire loop on top for the tool. Mostly I focused on the overall gesture and form from all angles- although I realized eventually that the legs are too short. But I'm proud of what I'm making! Can't want to follow the next lesson!
Andrew Joseph Keith
Great first sculpture! Keep going! I hope to see many more of your sculpture studies!

My first sculpture ever. I have only made a clay ball before this. I messed up the proportions, but it was nonetheless a great experience! Used my fingers, and a little pin.

Hey nicely done a great first study. I like how you've simplified the forms to focus on the primary forms. I think this is good for this first study and I would continue to go through the next exercises. What I would focus on next is the silhouette or outline from each angle and getting that more accurate to the model (especially the front and side view outlines) I think that will help for your next go and as you start to add more details and anatomy. Keep up the great work!

My first attempt at the $5 Sculpture Challenge. I have to do it over since I got confused about one of the rules.

I want to video me progress are you using your phone?
Andrew Joseph Keith
For this I was using my camera to film (a Lumix G85 I think it was but now I also use the Lumix S5) but a normal camera phone is definitely good enough to film the progress as long as you have a good lighting set up.

Hi Andrew, here is the first attempt of my sculpture... I have face a challenge making the armature, couldn't find the wire which is flexible to play around, thats one of the reason the right hand became shorter... ordered a aluminium wire hope it will reach soon.
Andrew Joseph Keith
Hey super fun! great job at a first sculpture for the course! I'm sure you'll progress fast if you keep up the sculpting. Can't wait to see more!

My first sculpt. The clay I'm using is too soft and sticky to allow for details, I didn't make the bean small enough and the hard aluminum foil was getting in the way, I eye-balled the proportions (which mostly worked), the pose is not the correct tilt and a lot more mistakes I can see, but decided to move on and leave it as it is. It's fun to see how drawing, rudimendary anathomy knowledge and 3d modelling come together to help with sculpturing. For tools, I picked.. tooth picks :D, because the limbs were not holding on, a lot of aluminum foil for the bean, and.. a knife, just because it was in the video, but didn't need to use it except for drawing center lines.

Nicely done for a first sculpt! I look forward to seeing your progression which it seems will be fast. Keep it up!

My first sculpt since 2017! I'm happy with the results given this is the third sculpt I've ever done. I used Chavant clay instead of dollar brand clay because the stores around me did not have them available. So I thought to spend a little extra on medium oil based clay. The rest of the tools were around the house. A small piece of wood block, a paper clip, a safety pin, and a butter knife! (Took about an hour and twenty minutes).

Nicely done! I'm excited to see your progress as you continue the assignments.

Hello. This is my first-ever sculpture! :) I used Monster Clay Medium + these two tools and of course my hands :) Time spent two hours.
Andrew Joseph Keith
A great start! On to the next project! Keep the momentum going!

My first ever sculpture! Thanks Andrew, really enjoying the course and looking forward to progressing! Used a nail file as my tool.

Awesome! I look forward to seeing your progress as well!

5$Sculpture challenge! what a blast! Had a chop stick as my 'tool' but used it just for the centre line - found it easier to use my hands for the rest. Thank You.
Andrew Joseph Keith
great job! exactly what I'm looking for for this assignment. Getting your hands in some clay and having fun with it! keep going!

I retook some photos of my torso sculpture from the $5 sculpture Challenge since a lot of the comments about the sculptures was about photographing them in a nice, consistent environment.

Hi, my name is Claudia. I used a knife, scissor, wire, tape, foil, water, paper clip and clay. First I wanted to try the whole figure "trisha" but I could not get the foil into shape. Then I tried to build a shape out of wire/foil/tape. When I looked at the shape, I thought aaah naaa I'd rather start small :) So I chose the right foot of "trisha" (a toe would have been small). I don't know anything about anatomy, so I'm going to take classes to learn it. The same goes for drawing. I tried to get at least the ankle, a couple of tendons sculpted. I should have compressed the foot more. It is so flat. And the toes... :) But it was fun! I'm glad I finally freed up time to learn sculpting. So here is my worst work but not my best :) (English is not my native language so please bear with me)
Andrew Joseph Keith
great job! the feet are difficult and so there great to practice! Keep going!

How do you get all the images on one piece of equipment?
@carolinedy
ok, first time ever trying sculpting. I'm so nervous sharing but I need to improve somehow might as well be when I'm starting out. but I'm excited to keep looking at videos and seeing what I can do to improve. I've only had time to watch the $5 sculpture and the how to start sculpting videos so I'm sure this will all improve as I keep looking at the videos and getting feedback. I thought I had a pictures somewhere with just the tin foil as the base but can't seem to find the photos. I used tin foil, safety pin, paper clip and my hands. I think I used too much tin foil to start off with to make the woman because it was almost to scale and didn't have much clay on the actual sculpture because of it. there are spots the tin foil started coming through, but I guess it's a lesson I learned after finishing. the tin foil was too much on the head and probably the torso, so I couldn't carve very much on it, oh well smaller amount next time so I can use more clay. I also scraped the ear off and put it closer I might've regretted that decision but I think the ear improved just not the placing. super cheap start up, I just took forever doing it.

Hey a great start! Awesome for a first sculpture. Keep going! Can’t wait to see your progress!
@arnavvinod
Hey There! I have some experience in working with clay but this is my first figure-sculpting course. I normally paint, sketch (figure sketches as well) and sculpting terracotta clay but I was hesitant to do figure-sculpting as I failed many times when I was younger. I found a rekindled passion for figure-sculpting and signed up for this course. SO FAR, the course has helped me a lot. Tools I used were: 1) An unusually large toothpick that i found buried under some boxes 2) A random wire that was thrown away, I bent it in different shapes for carving, smoothening etc. 3) Foil for armature but for the 3rd sculpture i used paper and brown tape. 4) The WORST camera to take pictures of the figure. I apologise for the quality. Sculpting on a budget ;) P.S. I found that sketching the given models in different angles before sculpting them, is beneficial. I realised this at my 3rd sculpture though :(
Andrew Joseph Keith
Very good! Really like the character to them. Keep going!
