Communicating Volume Through Drawing

32

Volumetric Drawing Assignment

Select three images and create drawings that explore the volumetric concepts discussed in the lesson.

Focus on:

  • Implying volume using ellipses, overlaps, and plane changes
  • Applying simplified volumes to organize complex forms
  • Creating naturalistic and three-dimensional artwork

Your drawings can be as simple or as complex as you're comfortable with. Use the demos from the lesson as inspiration.

These are coming in late because I'm taking my time with practicing over tracing and trying to get the proportions right. It's horribly slow but there's progress. So, keep on keeping on! :)

I start with a dynamic simple shape to represent the movement, but later on I end up with stiff drawing when I try to add some 3D structure. How can I fix the problem?
Brent Eviston
I don;t think these are as stiff as you fear. When we move past gesture and begin to solidify the pose some loss of dynamism is expected. If you feel these are too stiff you can always look for ways to bring more dynamic back in once you've added some structure. But I think these are working well.
