This is a master study of one of my favourite comic artists Henry Flint
@superokay
I chose a Dave Malan piece to study. I really like how the eye is drawn to the most important features, this is a style id like to put into my work. I tried to replicate the subtle changes in line weight that’s so beautiful in the original, but the act of copying has made my lines look less fluid and natural. Should I be using this as a template for my own drawings as part of the master study or am I on the right track? There’s lots more inspirational artists id like to study, just want to make sure I’m doing it correctly
Melanie Scearce
I view master studies as a form of reverse engineering. I take my time and ask myself why the artist made the decisions they made as I try to recreate the image. That to me is more of the point than to get an exact replica of the image -- it's the information you glean from the process that you can then experiment with and see how you can integrate into your own process.
@superokay
Not sure if I fulfilled the requirements on this one. Maybe my sketches was a little simple, I enjoyed doing it though.

You're on the right track! I love the bird sommelier, keep playing with these ideas 👍
@superokay
Not sure how well I followed the brief here. I feel like they weren’t sketchy enough, lines were too bold
Martha Muniz
I think you definitely got the spirit! The idea of sketchy linework is to not be tied down into the smallest detail, but instead approach each line with confidence, intention, but also the ability to redo it if necessary. I think you definitely show those qualities, though if you would like a cleaner drawing, a tip would be to first start with very light lines and only place in a final, darker line once you figured out exactly where you want your lines to be.
@superokay
Attempting a bird using these techniques. I want to improve my line confidence, I guess repetition is the only way to improve that. Luckily I’m really enjoying simplifying these images

Great!

@superokay
i found this tough. I struggled to keep the proportions in check
Melanie Scearce
Great job simplifying!
@superokay
My attempt to put lessons learned into practice. I wanted to use a different portrait because I found trying to do the example portrait after the demo and critique I was heavily influenced by Stans picture. I’m happy with my effort, again my proportions are off.
@superokay
This is my before and after the demo. I feel like it’s a big improvement. I took a lot longer on proportions, still think they were slightly off. Really enjoyed this project
@superokay
Think I need to spend more time getting the proportions right.
