I'd call myself a polymath since I create art in various techniques: drawing, painting, ceramics, lampwork glass, crocheting and writing. Or just ADHD

I cant believe I thought the neck was aligned prior to putting it in photoshop lol. Help.
Sophia Neishtoot
your picture doesn't truly feel like a mistake - more like she leans her head into the camera - lens distortion.
Sophia Neishtoot
I feel very silly because this drawing felt so perfect, then I put it into Photoshop, and apparently it's extremely narrow and I can't even resize it to fit the photo - that's how inaccurate and skewed it is 🤦‍♀️

I see what you mean about him being too narrow. But, I feel like you captured his likeness. I really like it. Good job. I think the next time you can just check it a few more times before you fill in all the details and get a chance to make corrections.

Hey @Stan Prokopenko Is there any chance you could do a short intro to setting up digital brushes for sketching? General opinions are mixed on what kind of brush beginners should use when learning digital art and I'm having a hard time finding one that feels right. I know the brush itself doesn't matter in the big picture, but I am just a bit afraid of getting bad habits from using the wrong one. A few tips on things like what should be pressure controlled, what size/opacity should a brush be, etc., would help a lot. I randomly realized just now, that even though we got a great introduction to traditional tools, you didn't talk about digital ones much.
Sophia Neishtoot
As a long time digital artist, I'll try to help. First of all, whether you have a pressure-sensitive device or using the mouse is a huge difference. Don't expect amazing results with a mouse (though I started with a mouse for a very long time). I suggest you pressure control size. And move opacity away from 100% to whichever feels the least stressful to you. You can reduce both flow and opacity. What you SHOULDN'T do is make your brush blurry because this is cheap teen photoshop right away. And change the brush shape and settings meaningfully. For example: blurry brush for out of focus background, crisp brush for close features. As you learn tools more - start looking closely at professional digital drawings (make sure it's not AI) - and try to reverse-engineer what they did there. Have a crisp idea in your head of which medium you want to mimic with your digital art: oil? Pastels? Pencils? Then you know in which direction to look for tutorials and examples online. Because though everyone goes "Google it" and "Go watch Youtube" - they're not helpful if you're overwhelmed and have no idea where to begin and where you're going.

Nice job! you've done a great job of exploring the pose with your lines. Would love to see some of your reference sketches :)
Sophia Neishtoot
I hope to get included in the critique video :) I know I can do better, but I had so many attempts - it got me too stressed out, so I stopped.

I've bought the 2mm very soft leads and a large sketchbook (I'm a miniaturist)... I've been trying the overhand grip and drawing with my shoulder, but I couldn't grasp how to make a fine line other than the tripod way... And my palm hurts a lot... I've had an inflammation there in the past, the fact that now that injury is in the way of holding the pencil like a professional really bums me out... I also tried drawing vertically, and now my back issues are reminding of themselves too 🤦‍♀️ I'm such a mess, and I would really like to hear opinions on whether it may hurt to healthy people too, and is there a way to achieve professional results if I can't do it vertically or holding the pencil in the overhand grip for something other than shading the background...
Strange Quack
I don't think you should push your injury, lots of artists have their own way of holding the pencil. Think about lefties, they make beautiful art without holding the pen like "the professionals". Find a way for you to hold it, that doesn't interfere with your injuries.

Keep at it u can do it :)!

Hi Stan! Many thanks for the video, it was super informative :) I have just one shy comment - maybe it's just me (I'm not from the US), but the Amazon link to the sandpaper paddle directs me to a table tennis paddle :D
Sophia Neishtoot
It says it has a sandpaper surface... Do you see what I see, or are you directed to a different product? I'm also not in US :)

whoa, what are all these pears and portraits? Are we supposed to draw them already, before the beginning of the course??? I can't believe I'm late for something AGAIN, even before it began :'(

Not to worry. It is not obligatory but we are all waiting to get assignments so some started by drawing pears and portraits. What the videos suggest is that you start drawing... daily... play and have fun. So do not stress for being late. You are never too late to start drawing more to improve or to start drawing. Get some pears or shapes and doodle. Play with your different pencils. Practice lines and thickness. Just feel your tools and papers. If you worry about the $ inthe paper use the paper from the printer. Or even on top of a newspaper. Hold the pencil different than you used to. Just to play and experiment. And to get to know your resources. We all have pencils and some paper. We all know how to write so just have fun. The fruit and portraits are to inspire you. Raid your fridge and doodle draw or study

Same here lol. I am just waiting for that lesson to show. Kudos for those who already have started tho XD.

Did me as well. ha Agree with Dana I'm waiting for the course to start. For me it's not something I want to feel rushed about or pressured to do. Looks like everyone is having fun. Do what works best for you.

I also thought I was going nuts. I was like where are the lessons for this pear and portrait?? LOL

Nope. Some people just wanted to go ahead and draw them. (I'm waiting until the course starts.)

I don't really understand Discord... I sent you a friend request.

My first post here! I'm 32, I've been doing art since I was 5, but I've been avoiding academic drawing all this time... Now I'll really start and do my best. I feel like a complete beginner 🙈 Adding a highlight to an already white object totally failed.
