I'm only level 1, but I decided to try the level 2 assignment anyway, because why not. I think I'm getting the hang of differentiating the values. I start with everything lighter than it will be to get the shapes. Then I try to uniform the shading on the lightest values, darkening each darker value to create contrast as I get to shading it.

Good attempt. I like that your shading on the accent darks and the light midtones is pretty even. You do seem to be using curves, even though we wren't supposed to on this project, though. While you proportions are a bit off, they are better than an absolute beginner would draw them. If you look at the other level 2 entries I think you're on par with them, so maybe you're level 2, even though you consider yourself level 1.

After watching some of the course demos, I think I've been assuming more rules than there actually were. I was not aware that we were allowed to do things to aid in the drawing. Rather I thought we could only do what the assignment said to draw. Having a better understanding of the fluid nature of these assignments, I want to take another crack at them. Here is my second attempt at the pear, focusing on hard edges, values over picture, and more consistent shading with the pencil.

Nice work, and good approach!

Still working on line control with the pencil...

Dexterity with the pencil comes with practice! Try warming up your hand with some mark making exercises before your next drawing. Make lots of long marks across a page. Maybe practice some ellipses. This will get you in a looser mindset. The proportions look good and you line work is gentle. Keep it up!

So I ordered The Natural Way to Draw. Marshall gives a good sales pitch, and it actually sounds like the kind of exercises that I'm looking for. Let's see if I can make it through the 750 (375) hours of practice...

As someone who always struggles to self direct my practice it sounds interesting to me. Something to go back to when I have an hour to study but don't know what to do in it. Have you started it? Do you think you are getting much out of it?

YouTube has this as age-restricted due to the f- and s- bomb in the first 10 seconds. I imagine if you bleep it and re-upload, the video can then be accessed from this site.

I struggle to keep shades consistent as I'm just learning to use these pencils for drawing. Also found after I did the contours that I had 9 values. It was difficult to reduce them down to only 5 and I had floating lines everywhere.
