First attempt without seeing the video and critique. I must say it was a fun one! I completely lost track of the time and had to force myself to stop adding more details as this was not the objective. I want to give it another try using pencil and paper after I watch the video and critique.

After watching the videos I realize the character's face is too dark because I used little of the lightest value.

Hello Everyone! Here’s my first assignment, definitely came out looking more like an avocado instead of a pear lol 😂. Question, I was trying to get an even layer when rendering but I kept seeing white spots which lead to the darkened layers. Is that because of the 300 g/sm paper’s texture? How can I improve? Thank you 🙏
Eduardo Borges
It's quite dark but the forms are clearly visible. In my opinion there is only one thing to improve: use more values (I can only see 3 instead of 5). Adding more values should also solve the problem with the drawing being too dark (it's not directly related to the paper I guess).
@irene_prada
I learned a lot. What do you think could improve?
Eduardo Borges
You managed to nicely show clear edges as requested and the whole drawing looks quite 3-dimensional to my eyes. Not sure if only 5 values were used (I had the same issue to be honest). I would you say you only have to improve drawing facial features (the nose specially), but this is the topic of another course. Well done!

Second attempt after watching the videos. I struggled a lot when trying to lay down clear and consistent values using pencil and paper (realized I probably spent too much time on Procreate the past year or so).

I definitely had fun! But I’m sure I’ll learn a lot in the value section! Hahaha.
Eduardo Borges
Nice drawing! I may be wrong, but I think all values on the left side of his face should be darker than any value on the right. In your rendering all values got a bit mixed.

After watching the video, I drew Pear #3. I think it's better. I did not smudge or smear the lead...my paper is textured. I used more pencils this time, HB, 2B, 6B. I had trouble creating different shades of grey. They all seemed to blend into the same shade.

I also had the same issue with my pencils. Please let me know in case you find a good solution. Regarding the drawing, I like it but the objective is to simplify all shapes and you definitely added a lot of details.

Have a look at the critique videos where Stan mentions that the thin squiggle line is not how the inner dark shadow is supposed be rendered. Also, to my eyes it appears like you only have 2 or 3 values. That said, I like how you defined the general shape of the pear (it looks like a pear!).

On my third and fourth attempts I finally feel like I'm understanding the rules of the game, even though I struggled to get the shapes right. When working with pencil and paper I found it particularly difficult to lay down the correct values despite employing different pencils (7H, HB, 2B, 4B, and 8B).

You first image does a great job of doing what he described as shading "that will look like paper cut outs". You did a good job simplifying the shapes.
